care to give actual criticisms anon? Or are you just going to say "book bad"

It has murder, rape, prostitution, kidnapping, and the most detailed exploration of a depraved mind in literature, and you found it boring? Maybe literature isn't for you, kiddo.

I like the book well enough but I feel like HH is too deliberately artificial for it to be anything more than a superficial "exploration of a depraved mind." I don't think the "point" inasmuch as there is one is to understand evil better through Humbert.

>action
Does every book you read need wild, novel events with outlandish characters doing unrealistic things? Why not just enjoy something cerebral?

You read Nabokov for the beautiful prose and wordplay. Want action? Read fiction with that for a premise.

your opinion is trash.

>> No.21914941

Well duh, depravity has always been nothing but boring because it is the default way of being human. This book is one of those comforting hugs telling you that it‘s ok to be trash and ofc people lap that up like it is the nectar of the gods.

Maybe not ADHD need for action but every good has to have novelty.

>> No.21914998

>>21914991
Not necessarily. Novelty is for entertainment, and as we know, there is not much new under the sun. Sometimes people write and read for comfort, and then it is more suitable to stick with the predictable and known. Then it is more about generating a certain scene to evoke particular emotions, memories or just feeling seen. It‘s the difference between a reader thinking „oh shit, i was not expecting THAT“ and „wow, i have always felt that way but i never put it into words so specific and fitting.“

Almost halfway through it now, and it's engaging enough. Just find it hilarious Nabokov bashed Faulkner. Faulkner's mythic madman style dwarfed Nabokov's cooly cerebral passable prose.
