21909823 No.21909823 [Reply] [Original]

Hi everyone. We did an interview with Ryan/K. R. Hartley, the editor of &amp magazine. It'd mean a lot (especially, I'm sure, to him) if you could check it out and hear his voice and the enthusiasm he has for /lit/ and the work he did for &amp. He goes into some neat history about former /lit/ projects like the Quarterly and the Moby Dick commentary, as well.

Ok, one of the editors for /unreal/ here. I was behind the Oriental project
None of the editors (nor any contributors to our projects as far as we are aware, but that's a lot of people who we are not responsible for anyway) have engaged in doxxing of any sort

For about half a year now however, a number of individuals have taken issue with us, very likely for no other reason than we are trying to do something that goes beyond the board (because people here can be stupidly bitter and unhinged as we should have been prepared for) and this is the source of such rumours. Our server was first targeted by a number of raids by what we believe to have been a group of two or three, but utilising many more alt accounts than that.
We then did what we could to identify the people behind this (not their real identities, just what information they themselves had already made available) and when this was discovered several of us received threats of violence and doxxing ourselves. Now, we aren't too worried about that actually happening, but this is the source of the rumours that we engaged in doxxing ourselves.

Most posters saying this are probably from one of these individuals and if not they are responding to it being posted by these individuals at an earlier time

Because this situation became so much of a headache we decided to shut down the public server, what is the point after all if it leads to stupid shit like this instead and actually harms productivity?

However, someone convinced us to simply give the server to a trustworthy individual and let him turn it into a server for Writing /General/. A lot of those guys were already in the server, have contributed to unreal projects and so they can have it. The server should no longer be a target as unreal is not involved in admin any more or using it. We will however continue to drop by in order to share our podcast and ask for submissions for future projects

You can join the new server here https://discord.gg/HpuC4XPB

Here is literal proof of one of the Unreal hosts talking about doxxing another creator. Ignore the bullshit fake statement above. It’s a ploy they’ve cooked up to make Unreal look innocent when they all know they’re guilty as sin. Don’t trust them. Don’t submit to them. Don’t buy from them. Don’t help to promote the trash they peddle. Boycott Unreal Press if you care about internet privacy and anonymity.

Please explain how this is evidence of doxxing on our part?

Ari, the individual mentioned in your screenshot (possibly was not one of those involved in the raiding/ threats but we won't ever be able to confirm) was not doxxed by any of us. That is a discord username

In no sense is identifying malicious individuals openly in the way we did (not revealing personal information or going after them in real life, if we even could) doxxing

It is also very clear from the way you communicate you are a member of this malicious group, it's entirely transparent, any outside viewer can see.

Hey boiz.
Editor anon here. Or I guess you know my name now anyway. I want to apologize for seriously lolcowing myself, going crazy and abusing myself (it’s not the first time as most of you know). I am out of jail now for a sec but I’ll be back there soon for some more comeuppance.
I’ve decided to share the inbox and some website assets with some anons to better democratize &amp and help secure a brighter future for it. I don’t go back to jail for about another month, and in the meantime I’m going to be finishing some book reviews before I jump into a new issue of &amp or any other projects. I have a tendency to fill my whole plate while I’m sober and motivated and then let my efforts spoil and rot once I’m down and out, but I’m very serious about the book reviews and &amp in general so you can count on me to do that.

My gf and I read this thread last night and, man. There were tears. Which sounds gay but I have to say that the support blows my mind and breaks my heart. I’ll leave it at that lest I expose myself as emotional (okay).

I’m setting up everything now to hand over some of these reins, so bear with me, and bump the thread, and I’ll give an update this afternoon. Also if you don’t believe me when I say that I’m him, the only proof I have to offer before I drink this coffee and eat breakfast is this super shitty webpage template that I stashed when I was working:

Tough call handing things over but I can respect it. Do you trust these new people or are they just internet randos? The benefit of a dictatorship is unity of command. I can easily imagine this whole project disintegrating once its fate is decided by more than one. Internet autists will fight over any scrap of imagined power they perceive can be possessed. They can be extremely narrow-minded and may not buy into the idea that this project is cooler than them.

Question: can this process be reversed? Are you temporarily delegating in absentia or are you officially relinquishing direction over the project? Because you have done an admirable job despite your issues.

&amp isn’t a book series, it’s a magazine. that’s the important distinction here. pulp magazines have a long history of publishing critical letters to the editor/author that contain negative feedback on stories from past issues as well as supportive letters containing positive feedback. it helps to foster discussion and garner attention from people who like the drama, for better or for worse. an example of
this would be the rivalry between HP Lovecraft and Fred Jackson that played out in the letters section of Argosy magazine, with each criticizing the other’s stories. their correspondance became an in-joke among the magazine’s readers, and helped launch both of their reputations. so no, it doesn’t seem like a weird idea to me. if a story garners a negative response it’s not a slight against &amp as a publication, it’s just commentary on that particular story. &amp publishes anything, good or bad, so incorporating a monthly section with some reader responses and reviews—like a combination of actual short reviews and shitpost responses screencapped from the previous month’s release thread—could be a way of acknowledging the sometimes absurd disparities in the quality of the content, as well as a funny homage to &amp’s message board origins. since you openly admit to knowing very little about magazines and publishing, perhaps you’re not the ultimate arbiter of whether an idea is stupid or not.

>not retarded

I’m definitely retarded, though perhaps not in the same way as the other commenters that you were comparing me to. I’m glad that you liked the idea of the monthly section, though. The inclusion of reader critiques and commentary through letters to the editor are a major part of what I find compelling about the whole magazine format, and why the distinction between book and magazine is so crucial here.

A novel is the product of a sole author’s vision—it’s a monologue of sorts, to which the reader becomes a passive audience. But a magazine is by its very nature collaborative: it may be curated by a single editor, but it is always comprised of other people’s creations. The inclusion of multiple voices and multiple forms of content (photographs, art, fiction, poetry, reviews, letters, classifieds) make the magazine format into a fascinating dialogue in which the reader can actively participate by offering his or her own contributions. Because the roles of creator and audience become blurred, I think that the magazine format acts as a sort of equalizer, curating and
facilitating the creation and discussion of art and media in a way that hadn’t been done before the pulp zine was created. The format embodies one of the unique qualities of the internet itself: a variety of content that can be responded to and engaged with publicly, not simply consumed in isolation.

Anyway, sorry for the autistic rambling; I just find this topic really interesting. I had a whole editorial vision for potential future issues of &amp, but I don’t think that those ideas will ever be actualized now.

Nice. I know you’re in this thread, “Jet” (I won’t deadname you). When the best-of releases I don’t want to see anything in it that is even vaguely inspired by any of the graphic design that I did or the cover mock-ups that I made or the font choices that I suggested. I’m talking absolutely *nothing.* You don’t get to treat me like I’m stupid, ridicule me, insult me, devalue my contributions, threaten me, cut contact, come back and trick me into seeing all of the cruel shit that you said about me because you want to inflict maximum emotional pain, refuse all communication, force me out of &amp, and then still take advantage of all of the work that I put in to prop up your project. If you want to do it solo then start from the beginning and actually do everything yourself. I was involved in the project from its inception and spent significant amounts of time helping to curate the content for it, bump the threads, and generate ideas for you. If you don’t want me to be involved then don’t take advantage of any of my ideas. Use the original cover you created that everyone liked less than my redesign. Use your original font choices that everyone liked less than mine. Do it all yourself and see how that works out for you.

What propaganda? &amp has been failing since it stopped releasing monthly issues at the end of 2021. The original editor is so troubled that he never follows through and vanishes for months at a time, and now he’s apparently handed over the reins to someone equally unrealiable, considering that the best of lost all momentum months ago and is nearly forgotten. The threads stagnated because he never came up with any clear schedule and took what was originally a group effort private. He got pissy when anyone asked for updates or criticized the way he was handling things and at the end doubled down and tried to shut down the graphic design talk which was the only thing drawing interest to the threads by that point. Now even that draw seems to be gone, considering that the main graphic design/critique anon claims to have been blacklisted because of whatever issues he has with her even though working on &amp was always open to anyone with the right skillset before. He’s alienating other contributors and tainting &amp with his personal problems like a fag instead of working them out privately for the sake of the magazine. And he’s apparently involved in the Unreal doxxing and trolling drama to boot. We all know that this site is full of schizo autists who hold grudges, so a transparent name change isn’t going to fix this mess or do anything to quell the backlash.

&amp’s success in the early glory days is irrelevant to the issue at hand. The original editor did good and consistent work for a while, but his chaotic life has gotten in the way and &amp has been in decline since then. When he’s back in jail and has handed over the reins to this new guy, the future doesn’t look good. The stupid drama doesn’t diminish &amps previous succcess, but it’s very relevant to &amp’s future. With the best-of editor at the helm I doubt that &amp’s productivity will continue. Your point that &amp is the most successful /lit/ project to date has nothing to do with what that anon was saying, which is that the shit going on right now makes him wary of &amp in general and he doesn’t want to be associated with it. I'm not a pornstar, although I filmed a pornsite in Costa Rica 15+ years ago. I could've been a pornstar but I just have never had the desire to get my erect cock out in front of a group of guys just to fuck some paid chick.

I actually don't even like strippers or pornstars, I'm more into women without tattoos, who dress modestly and are at least a bit redpilled and, of course, unvaxxed.

I actually really enjoyed doing caregiving for disabled seniors, that was my favourite job. Better than selling porn. Literally getting paid a $1000 to just hang out with some old people and make them smile. So wholesome.

Much more wholesome than looking into the butthole of some anally-gaped pornstar just so you can take a screenshot and add it to a website.

I wonder if Ryan agrees that Vancouver has been in such an incredible nose-dive over the last 10 years. Right around 2015 when I moved out of Gastown in Vancouver, like 8 people I knew died that year. Dagger Mike, my old coke dealer, died from an overdose a couple days before I was supposed to pick up an 8ball! I pretty much quit right after that. I hope Ryan can get off those poisoned drugs and stick to weed and booze, if anything, as I'm 100% convinced the drugs are poisoned on purpose to kill off society's misfits so Canada can be an even more pozzed, conformist hellscape than it already is.

I've been around this board for years and due to my own apathy I've never checked out &amp or lit quarterly and all I've read of Unreal is the Tales of the Unreal book with the green cloaked being on the cover so I'm not very familiar with any of these publications (if that's the correct term. Presses? Magazines? Idk) With that being said I've been catching up on all of them lately (drama and scandals included) and Im whole heartedly rooting for them to survive, and then to thrive and grow. I thought initially that having only one lit based publication would be best for everyone involved if the cooperation and ability to make that a reality was possible. Now it's clear to me that the different ones are doing distinctly different things from one another and they should all exist concurrently. I just worry that the non-writing related shit surrounding &amp and unreal could result in.one or both of them.splintering off into more groups and next thing we know we have 8 different lit publications with everyone choosing sides and having the writers spread out thinner amongst more groups instead of having at least a little unity with all the best writers we have to offer contributing to and being presented by only a couple publications/presses with different aims. Since I know where I'm posting I don't want to sound like a retard by saying we need to stick together but I think it would help all of us most if we did that. Obviously we can't control the actions of the editors and people in control of these projects but I just really hope everything works out for &amp and Unreal and that the majority of us that are interested in what they're doing can support them and help them be the best that they're able to. I'm very excited about the future of the things we have but the (admittedly excessive at times) pessimist in me feels like it may be anxiously awaiting the landfall of a sinking ship. I don't even know why I care but I feel invested at this point and I'm hoping for the best for all involved.

Sure, but maybe there's writers who aren't writing with the intention of reaching every average person. There are still readers out there. I declined to publish with them a week ago and today they sliced circles from the glass of my windows and killed my wife, children, and dog with a series of silenced gunshots before they let themselves inside, pistols drawn and ready. I am hiding in a closet and I can smell smoke. The only reason I could have survived is because it's Monday and they expected me to be at work. That's all I can think about right now as my entire world comes to an end: they were just trying to send a warning. I called 911 and told them what was happening and the dispatcher told me to come out of the closet and stop wasting people's time.

The /lit/ renaissance refers to a short-lived surge in interest regarding /lit/ fiction and /wg/ authors which began with the publication of the first BSR rankings (later refined to the /lit/ Top Ten) on January 7th, 2023, peaked with the return of &amp editor K.R. Hartley on March 16th, 2023, and ended with the infamous "Message in a Bottle" scandal on April 5th, 2023, wherein K.R. Hartley disappeared under conditions of duress and several members of the Unreal staff doxxed other contributors and engaged in below-the-belt personal attacks, before receiving a backlash that forced their indefinite withdrawal from public life. Prominent figures include Ogden Nesmer, K.R. Hartley, John “Rhyme” Davis, Zachary “Zulu” Alan Smith, Lewis Woolston, and all Unreal contributors. However, this time period was marked by an increasing interest in archiving obscure/forgotten /lit/ authors, and the total count was finally tabulated at 32 authors who have shilled or gained notoriety on /lit/. F. Gardner later attempted to take credit for and capitalize on this event, despite having had absolutely nothing to do with it.

"Pooh-pooh to the Unreal Bros!" snarled the Troon.
"I'll samefag another two hundred gay-ops posts by next noon!"

They're just booting up now! I know just what they'll do!
Their mouths will hang open a minute or two
Then the Unreal Bros will all cry boo-hoo!

That's the noise," grinned the Troon, "that I simply must hear!"
He paused, and booted up discord on his hundredth alt account of the year.

And he did hear a sound rising as his screen glowed.
It started in low, then it started to grow.

But this sound wasn't sad!
Why, this sound sounded glad!

Every bro in Unreal, both lazy and hardworking,
Was scheduling releases despite the Troons samefag posting!

He hadn't stopped Tales 2 from coming! It came!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!

And the Troon, with his manly feet overlarge in his high heels,
Sat puzzling and puzzling. "How could no one see the big deal?

I hit them with gaslighting! I leveraged stale old &amp clout!
I hit them with dox accusations, of both myself and their fellow louts!"

He puzzled and puzzled till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Troon thought of something he hadn't before.

Maybe a samefagging freak on the internet, he thought, is something they deplore.
And the Unreal projects, perhaps, means to them a little bit more!

Once there was a mainstream liberal arts college which taught every lie you can imagine: round earth, real apes, and even an afterlife. One day the literature professor was giving a lecture on the /lit/ renaissance.

"The /lit/ renaissance refers to a short-lived surge in interest regarding," railed the professor shrilly, rasping and seething as he raked the blackboard with his wicked chalk.

One student bravely stood up and then raised his hand, seizing the attention of everyone in the room. "Excuse me, teacher," he said, "but I believe the father of the /lit/ renaissance was actually F. Gardner!"

They tried to silence him but he did not care if anyone wanted to hear what he had to say, and eventually people stopped responding to him. His voice was the loudest, until he got bored and left. That student's name? Jason Bryan. His grade? F.

You are retarded and didnt watch the video or read the thread. You (2-3 spammers potentially including Gardner) are an enemy of &amp and Unreal. I don't care if they're the only collaborative project left standing in this dung heap of a board: they're dragging you to goodliness and creative productivity whether you like it or not.

All this shit seems more to come from a hater of unreal than they/them(selves). Either way, this fuckery clings to them (not to &amp—but, like in the previous big thread, is grafted onto it, sadly); and that, that is just (getting real fucking) annoying. !!!

It's people that think they can't write and want to drag down people that do. I hope anon feels better but I don't give a damn about anything that gets in the way of /lit/ creative effort. I don't even give a damn about the slander or misrepresentation, eventually the good stories will shine over the rest. We have to keep writing no matter what. I have even tried to help a few anons stop self-sabotaging their writing careers on /wg/ and &amp threads, anons who think any advice other than "give up" boils down to "just be yourself (and be rich)". Even editor thinks the drama is a joke but I believe his friends can help him get better.
Besides a lot of people I've seen here have full time careers, wife and kids and also trying to write. I know I worked my ass off to get where I am today and there's a lot more work to do. Lots of authors before and today are the same, it's normal to do so until you've published 5+ books. And sometimes I can't even post at work because crabschizos are getting IPs obliterated. Last thing writers need is this amateur kind of jealousy for people who are only beginning to imagine success.
