Reading Amerika made me violently upset, like I was having a panic attack from the sheer absurd futility of the protagonist's entire journey. So yeah if you like having heart palpitations probably that.

I personally preferred Amerika and consider it his finest work. It’s the funniest and actually would have had a happy ending (incomplete fragments of this are included at the end of the new Schocken translation)

Is this the only book that does that to you? Sounds interesting... picked up

I've never read Kafka before. Is The Metamorphosis a good book to start with?

The Castle. Amerika feels arbitrary compared to his two other novels but it is very kino.

I think 'The Trial' is a better start personally. Metamorphosis tends to feel a bit too on to the nose for most, especially because it occupies a more common place in popular culture.

Might be because of recency bias, but I remember Amerika feeling at the very least unique in his bibliography - especially because of its slightly more comedic bias. Since I read The Trial first, Castle seemed like more of the same.

America is one of my favorite novels. I can acknowledge it's flawed, not surprising since it's one of Kafka's first works. A reductive answer but Amerika just has such charm.

Also, the ending to Amerika was supposedly one of the only things Kafka was proud of having written.... and we don't have it bros :(

The Castle is the funniest thing he has ever written.

The Trial was so fucking good bros, the last 2 chapters elevated it to one of my favourite novels. I think I will read Amerika next
