At one time I suppose it would have included knowledge of the Greek and Latin classics in their own languages. But what about today's /lit/erati? Is /lit/ well read, and if so, how well read is /lit/?

Considering /lit/ leans so much towards Modernism and its reiterations, it'd have to be knowing English, French, and German, being widely read in at least one of them and familiar with the 20th classics in every one of them. In short, to be ein guter Europäer, but without the basis of a classical education

I personally believe that "well-read" means that a person reads a broad spectrum of books. Quantity over quality.

Read two books and be able to half ass summarize them and most people will call you well read because they don't read at all.

Well read means not just having read a wide span of literature but to have actually tead them well and put thought into each one, not just goingbthrough a checklist. It does need to be a large and varied library but you need to actually have beyond surface level understanding, not just enough to impress others without any.
I think French has lost the prestige it once commanded and is just there as a milestone in the progression of the western canon. Everyone knows it's contributions but every other lang's lit seems more fashionable or 'relevant'. It and other languages both made major contributions but the modern reader is more likely to need a comprehension for the more niche texts likely in German, Greek or even Italian (Greek is still underestimated in the zeitgeist outside Plato and Homer despite its understood importance just because it mainly pertains to one location and the classucal antuquity). Latin is perfectly rated and equally essential if not more considering its longer history throughout the middle ages. An education in the classics is the most important compared to knowing modern langs outside specialization.

I thought about learning Ancient Greek, but I decided that time is better spent just reading in English. I have so many things I want to do, I don't have the time. I wish I wasn't a wagie.

Even unwaged, there's too much to learn and not enough time. I've never had a full time job in my life and people think I'm really smart, the reality is I've had more time than they have and applied it to learning. I'm actually kinda stupid.
