Some of /lit/ can only appreciate literature performatively and so demand a critic like Bloom who can simply affirm that the orthodox canon, so to speak, is good good good, and what’s outside of it is mostly bad bad bad. So when such a mind encounters Eliot’s essay on Hamlet or Johnson’s on Milton, which can point out the flaws in masterpieces—the mind recoils. They take the orthodox canon of literature the way many Christians do the Bible, which is to say to never read it but to be offended at someone finding a flaw in it and so excommunicate him. Just as critics who actually read literature with great attention and thoughtfulness are often excommunicated by those who revere literature but never read it

What makes Samuel Johnson overrated? As far as modern criticism goes, Johnson is severely underrated. Not much attention is paid to him, even in studies of English literature. Even in Renaissance studies there are those in the camp that Johnson was a "bad" literary critic, or a "poor" political theorist. It's really only a minority of critics these days who are propping him up (including me.)

Life of Johnson isn't overrated, and Johnson isn't a hack neither, it's the funny portrait where Samuel Johnson has finished reading a bad book and looks with disgust toward the looker-on. Samuel Johnson was known for his caustic literary takes, particularly in his famous work "The Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets". In this work, Johnson wrote biographical sketches of various poets and writers, and was often very critical of their work. His writing was characterized by a sharp wit and a willingness to call out hypocrisy and foolishness wherever he saw it. Overall, Johnson's writing was known for its acerbic wit and scathing commentary, which often made him a controversial figure in his time.
