Finished this masterpiece a while ago. It is by far the most accessible Russian novel I have read.I tried Gogol, Dostoyevski and Tolstoi, but in comparison they felt sluggish, the characters often had some trivial motivation. Can anyone recommend me some pretentious Russian literature, so I can trick myself into believing I'm not just a retard?

Dr. Zhivago is underrated on this board. But Dead Souls actually features a character in the second life similar to Oblomov

He is probably being somewhat sarcastic since Oblomov had no motivation and is very sluggish. Chekhov is outstanding though, he and Gogol and the titans of the Russian short story

agree. by the way here is a cool book that analyses several Russian short stories from the perspective of a writer. Saunders does a great job of demonstrating just why the Russians were so good

Gogol is effortlessly easy to read. Kafka and Gogol entertain me forever.
Also try Russian Nabokov. (also Turgenev).

Indeed, I prefer Gogol, but Chekov is masterful. If you like his plays, check out Gorky of course.

Nice, thanks for the rec. Do you know if Nabokov’s lectures on Russian literature are worth reading? I found his commentary on Eugene Onegin very enjoyable

Lmao. Russian state has always been opposed to Russian writers. Reading Russian works isn't pro-government no matter who you read. Even Dugins daughter was blown up by FSB.

Cyrillic was very easy (at first glance) to learn because it resembles the greek alphabet quite a bit
We use B, П, Ф, Х, Л, P the same way as they do.
И and Й are the near-equivalent of η.
What filters me completely and breaks my flow when reading the script are ye, yo, yu, ya. Not to mention the Ц, Ч sounds
The very basic grammar also feels familiar (probably because it was based on a form of medieval greek) but I heard it gets significantly harder as you advance.

Wouldn't you say Tolstoy supersedes them?

If you want to start to get in to him, Renoir and Kurosawa both made excellent adaptations of The Lower Depths. Of course read the play afterwards, but Kurosawa's especially is a beautiful adaptation.

try sampling different translations, P&V seem to be the most popular for modern translations of Russian lit, but I've found them to be terrible to read

Also, Oblomov is basically my diary desu
