Why did /sffg/ say this was bad?
I read it a little slower than I'd read a truly great book (started Wednesday, just finished this morning) but it was a genuine fun, interesting read the whole way through. The video game shit was goofy and there isn't much flourish to the story or how it's told (apparently the only bit is done in the translation), but it does is job in showing me sci fi ideas put together in a way I haven't seen them before.
>but the characters-
There are 3 well realized characters, two of which form the actual story. They aren't great, deeply-studied characters, but this isn't a character drama. They serve their purpose just fine; the protagonist is as interested in going to the next page as me, and Dr. Wenjie, the only character who makes a character choice that drastically changes the world, has enough around her to make that choice interesting.
>but the prose-
You niggers clearly don't read. This is far from the worst prose in a good SFF work. Has nobody fucking read Asimov? The spam of walls of nonsensical Bakker paragraphs when someone asks for 'good prose' should've told me that though.
Yeah, good read. Excited for the next one.

Are you talking about necromancy? Because that's pretty much straight evil in all circumstances, and the way you phrase it as "cheating death" tends to support that view. Necromancy is the rape of natural law, the rape of the souls of the departed, the rape of their bodies, and the usurpation of whatever god has claim over their souls.
Now you can get around this in a few ways.
The first is the easiest and least offensive and risky: use whatever god of your choosing with the authority over life and death to grant it. This is typically best found in Christian literature, or at least literature with strong Christian allusion.
The other way is to go the complete opposite route, with atheist materialist perspective and no eternal soul, in which case evil doesn't exist and you can resurrect braindead meat puppets as much as you like and stick your brain in them if you so choose. There aren't very many of these Theseus' Ship stories because nobody likes them.

The Frugal Wizard's Handbook for Surviving Medieval England - Brandon Sanderson (2023)

This non-cosmere book most reminded me of a cross between H. Beam Piper's Paratime series and Philip K. Dick's We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, though by the end neither of those were that accurate. In the postscript Sanderson details how this book came to be and one of its primary inspirations was Jason Bourne, which it does lean heavily into that with its amnesiac protagonist who has a certain set of skills, though he's lacking in most other ways.

As can be seen on the cover, the wizard has a gun. That's because this is science fiction with some thriller elements set in an alternate Earth that has fantastical characteristics. Wizard is a semantic misdirect and there's no time traveling. There's an attempt to explain it all scientifically, though possibly not enough to where it could be considered Hard Fantasy. A reader can also expect many of Sanderson's recurrent themes such as redemption, persistence despite repeated failure, having your own world, being powerful relative to others, and chaste romance.

The main problem I had with this is that it lacks substance, which is fitting because so does its setting, as explained in-universe. Reading this felt like something that one reads to have read. It may well be an exemplar of highly readable mediocrity. The other problem was that I thought there was tonal dissonance with how humorous it tries to be, which is to say the humor didn't work for me this time. A lot of is because it's entirely out of place because it's for the reader rather than people the protagonist is talking to. The most reoccurring joke is him briefly reviewing stuff. There's also a bit of light poking at contemporary events and social trends.

There are several pages of art in this, many in a form similar to a four panel comic. Those that didn't have anything to do with the events of the book seemed entirely out of place, even if they were meant to show what other possibilities there were for the technology that allows the story to occur.

Fortunately for this book it's one of the secret projects, which will probably give it a wider readership than it would if it were by itself, because I don't really know who this would be for. Some of his other non-Cosmere works have similarities to this, but not enough to mention, and I didn't like them. Giving this a three may even be a bit high, but 2.5 seems a bit low, as there wasn't enough that I thought was worse than mediocre and enough that was better than decent.

I don't know what Sanderson's intentions for the ending were, but it allows for the slightest possibility of unifying everything he's ever written. The most likely interpretation though is that it's provide an idea of what may happen after their story has ended. I personally would find it very amusing if he did unify everything though. Maybe he can do that with one of his final works before retiring.

Just read Peculiar Soul from Royalroad up to chapter 50 and i have to say it sucks pretty bad.
The worldbuilding is in some parts good but in others very flimsy.
The powers are potentially pretty cool but unfortunately the mc never really uses them in cool ways.
The MC might be one of the worst i've ever read about though.
He doesn't have a backbone and is constantly manipulated and can't really do anything about it.
The second someone tells him something he takes it as truth.
He gets mocked and humiliated constantly. There's the obligatory angry woman who insults him and he just takes it.
He's a huge pushover who does whatever he's told for anyone that talks to him.
What a waste of time

...what? These were explained in detail. The scientists are offing themselves because as far as they can tell, theyre living in the matrix and their entire lifes work is futile. All their accomplishments and discoveries mean nothing.

And the numbers were the sophons(deeznuts) passing through the eye, or the camera film, or whatever.

Frankly speaking the worst part of the first book is the fact that the cry solarins are lame as fuck. I read the book because i heard about the "aliens made reality blink" think and was intrigued. But it turns out it was just some bug jews trying to subvert humanity.

We actually got aliens on that level in the third book, but by that time all the wonder had worn off.

The scientists offing themselves is weird when you consider how most scientists love solving a problem, just dumping it all at once that ‘shits not working gonna kms’ feels… cheap? But I don’t think it’s a big enough offense to drag the whole book down. I do agree that the reveal that the trisolarans blinking reality was just an optical illusion was a letdown. I'm super bad at describing what books are about without spoilers. It's kinda GoT-inspired. There's court politics, usurpation, war, an ancient and wise forest being, a few ancient evils and some not so ancient evils that have background schemes, stuff like that.

I'm into the style of writing, which I can't really describe. The author is very clever with fantasy linguistics and the prose has a good flow that I like.

The Briar King is basically setup for the rest of the books. I was on the fence about the series until a bit into book two, but he really knocked that one out of the park with catharsis.

I posted about it a few threads ago, but off the top of my head the main problems are that the first three books are the same story, with just the place names changed. The vast majority of the cast members are just fine - except for the magic users. Especially Polgara is a total cunt throughout the whole book. Also, all the male-female relationships are sitcom-core with the women being competent eyerollers and the men bumbling and foolish.
Above it all, though, was that on the very first paper page of the book, the about the author section, it says that Gemmell decided to write fantasy to
>develop certain technical and philosphical ideas concerning that genre
which isn't just the most pretentious thing I've heard an author say, up there with someone like China Mieville, every single page afterwards is the most generic LotR copy you've read in your life, with the ring being replaced by an orb.
The only reason I don't liek Lord of the Rings is because I found the prose dry.

I'm glad to see a new thread on /lit/ dedicated to Science Fiction & Fantasy General, or /sffg/ for short. It's always exciting to discuss books, authors, and literature in general, but I have a soft spot for speculative fiction.

For those who are new to the thread, the recommended reading charts provided in the OP are a great resource for finding new books to read. They offer suggestions for both science fiction and fantasy books, sorted by subgenre, so it's easier to find what you're looking for.

As for the discussion at hand, I'm not quite sure what "which side mogs?" means in the context of the image posted, but I have to agree with another user who suggested that Russell, Shaw, and Wells should have been on the left to give them a fighting chance.

I also noticed a question about Gene Wolfe's "An Evil Guest" and how it compares to his other works. I think it's a good entry-level book for those who are new to Wolfe's work, but it's not his best. "Fifth Head of Cerberus" is often cited as his masterpiece, and the "Book of the New Sun" series is also highly recommended.

Lastly, I saw a question about how to stop hating authors and narrators for no reason. I think it's important to remember that everyone has different tastes, and what works for one person may not work for another. It's okay to not enjoy a particular author or narrator, and there's no need to force yourself to listen to or read something you don't enjoy. Instead, focus on finding works that resonate with you

Plenty of medieval fantasy books have a setting modeled after 12th-15th century Europe (or 12th-14th if you're trying to exclude the Renaissance as not "High Medieval" enough)
But if you mean fantasy books actually set IN 12th-15th century Europe, well then you're in trouble because 99% of fantasy authors do not like to make Historical Fantasy, they need to concoct entirely new worlds and cosmologies in order to break out of their shells.

One of the rare examples I know of is the character Jirel of Joiry, a series of short stories written by C. L. Moore in the 1930s about a 13th or 14th century Breton countess with a similar attitude to Conan the Barbarian (or more aptly, Red Sonja). There's also Between Two Fires, set during the Black Death of the 1340s, but I personally find it much overrated and overshilled on /sffg/, especially on account of its grimdark edgelord attitude and fixation on protagonistic homosexual clergy.

There are a greater number of historical fantasy books set in the Dark Ages, due to association with the Matter of Charlemagne and Arthurian legend or Norse mythlogy. Furthermore, there is good historical "fantasy" in the sense that the real-world is recreated pretty much as-is but with the names and polities distinct in a sort of "alt-history", such as Guy Gavriel Kay's fiction and the Deryni novels, but these tend to abandon the supernatural as an immanent element.

from wikipedia:

>A Song for Arbonne (1992), inspired by the Albigensian Crusade in medieval Provence
>The Lions of Al-Rassan (1995), set in an analogue of medieval Spain
>The Sarantine Mosaic, inspired by the Byzantium of Justinian I
-Sailing to Sarantium (1998)
-Lord of Emperors (2000)
>The Last Light of the Sun (2004), inspired by the Viking invasions during the reign of Alfred the Great
>Under Heaven (April 27, 2010), inspired by the 8th century Tang Dynasty and the events leading up to the An Shi Rebellion
>River of Stars (April 2, 2013), taking place in the same setting as Under Heaven, based on the 12th century Song Dynasty and the events >around the Jin-Song Wars and the transition from Northern Song to Southern Song
>Children of Earth and Sky (May 10, 2016), taking place in the same world as The Lions of Al-Rassan, The Sarantine Mosaic, and The >Last Light of the Sun, and taking place in a world based on Italy, Istanbul and the Balkans in the 15th century
>A Brightness Long Ago (May 14, 2019), prequel to Children of Earth and Sky[8]
>All the Seas of the World (May 17, 2022), sequel to A Brightness Long Ago
But again keep in mind, these are only "fantasy" in the sense that they are "our world, but the name's are changed and the things didn't happen in the history books", there's no dragons or magic or elves or anything.

I finished it, good Malazan fanservice.
Originally this was meant to be a series of 4 books, but recently it was increased to be 6, so this is the 4/6. In the previous book, the third, one of the complaints was it was too rushed. This one definitely takes a step back.
It's set a bunch of years after the previous book, the empire has full control over quon tali and the campaign into korel has just failed. This is about the campaign north to take over falar.
Main PoV is certainly tayschrenn and it's what the title is referring to, how he is forged into the high mage.

Can only speak for myself but I find the focus on dramatic relationships, sexual deviant obsession and faux-realism extremely tiresome and they never do anything cool even in the moments that are built up for it. It's really like they're writing for a subset of older women and homosexuals and no one else.
Personally i've switched completely to chinese stuff and now mostly (the decent quality) MTL at that. Even something that's clearly built on a wish-fulfillment premise like system novels or similar at least can appeal to me on a base level in which modern western fantasy published in the last 15 years doesn't.

>but when characters from different parts of the world start meeting and the clock starts ticking, it is awesome.
I really don't remember any awesomeness at all. The clock starts ticking in the first book, and also stops ticking that same book with the "endless winter" trope that basically manages to exterminate all food and livestock on the planet such that the lion's share of the population of humans starves. There's probably under 5,000 humans alive in the world by the end of the series, there's no sense of scale at all because the world is effectively already destroyed 3 books before the villains' plans are really put into action. It's so terrible, I hate how the villains are so monumentally overpowered and the heroes so utterly outclassed that they basically do nothing for 3000 pages until the villains trip on a banana peel in the last 10 pages of the last book and the plot just sort of fizzles out. Absolute fucking trash, one of the cheapest tricks I've ever seen put to print before marvel-shit started dominating cinema.

An argument like that only works if it's not a REALLY common critique. It's like the "you meet an asshole once, okay, you met an asshole, you meet several assholes a day, you might be the asshole" deal. I admittedly am somebody who doesn't exactly try to scrape up characterisation too deeply, but I can generally tell when somebody is written more as a plot vehicle than a character. Haven't read Malazan, though, so can't comment on that one's characters.

I might be wrong since I haven't read the books in awhile, but pretty sure not everywhere is having an endless winter. The only places with an endless winter are those took over by the Norns or under the Storm King's influence. The weather is still fucked, with worse summers and winters, but it isn't constantly cold. Simon even sees a harvest festival/religious holiday thing in the first book that is fine. Pretty sure the southern lands are actually getting too hot, with the Gnats starting to produce rapidly because of it.

In terms of the rest, I understand where you are coming from and it is a matter of personal taste. I personally don't mind the heroes constantly being outclassed and fighting for survival. It makes certain victories fill more weighty. I will say that the ending is the weakest part of the series and even left me disappointed. Felt too rushed and contrived. However, I still enjoyed the journey there.

The multivolume series is gay. I really like one-off standalone novels. The shorter the better. The Deep is my favorite.
How do we go back to this better time of the 70's and 80s? Make f&sf great again

He may be referencing using the balls of one's palms (the fleshy bit of the hand near the wrist, opposite of the thumb, in a straight line down from the pinkie finger) to rub the tears from one's eyes
but more likely he's just a fucking idiot because he speaks exactly like Fromdrones who think braindead Souls games' Zanzibart """"lore"""" is well-written

the only good parts of the journey there were the Sithi parts
excepting when they were ruined at the last minute when Queen Shotacon what's-her-name gets assassinated by Dieter Stark or something in the middle of saying "THE ULTIMATE SECRET PLOT TWIST ESSENTIAL TO UNDERSTANDING THIS NOVEL'S PLOT AND BACKGROUND IS - ACK" and then it's never explained what she intended to say

He's just typo'd "bawl their eyes out". Given it's the only real typo it's probably a genuine mistake and hey, people make those, but still funny to see.

Normie fantasyfags can't into malazan everybody knows that, most of them are retarded zoomers that need everything to be spoonfed to them.
I blame vidya and "epic lore" vids on Youtube.

Malazan has amazingly written characters full of depth and subtext, but few to none of them have internal monologue vomiting exposition to the reader so brainlets think Malazan isn't about the characters, when in reality the characters are far and away the best part of Malazan.

Always wondered why this doesn't really happen despite male writers always getting the coomer stigma. With female writers it's guaranteed the MC will be getting it on with a monster. If it's scifi she'll probably get it on with an alien or just mundanely get raped by humans
