The problem with his position is that he doesn't realize the good of living outweighs the suffering. Why do you think most people fight so much to live or try not to die? His whole argument is a post-hoc rationalization, if you get up from your armchair and go outside, you'll see most people do indeed enjoy the fact that they're alive. Not consciously, no, but almost anyone would be scared if you held a gun to their head. Not to mention happiness itself is arguably not the point of a good life any way. At the end of the day you could always just kill yourself, but not even the author believes in his own philosophy which is why he hasn't committed suicide yet. If you don't believe in your own philosophy, why should others? Ergo, it's not taken very seriously. There's nothing complicated here, it's all very straightforward.

Benatar presents many arguments as to why the human condition/dilemma is terrible. Among these arguments are those who consider that there is much more evil than good. It also proves that self-assessment of our quality of life is unreliable due to some psychological biases. About that of the suicide that you say. I haven't finished reading the book yet, but Benatar argues many times that death is bad and not liberation, it's just another claw in the human dilemma.
