Bruce chatwin it's still the king of travel literature, I might have read everything he ever wrote in the month I discovered him.

Patrick Leigh Fermor is another favorite. But the man's whole life is an epic. One of those people who was both a scholar and a mercenary and a war hero and did it all for real.

Looking at my shelves there's also the complete collection of Evelyn waugh travel books, of which I've read maybe half. Fun stuff regardless.

There's also a lot of very old travel literature, I really like Henry James's Italian Hours, but that's of niche specialty interest.

I think Paul Theroux is probably the greatest travel writer who is still very accessible to a modern audience. He addresses the philosophy of travel more deeply in his work than many others do.

If all else fails, there's always Rick Steves.
