Does Didion, in your opinion, transcends boring boomer takes about 60' and 70's? I had enough of that. Does she have anything to offer to a young person reading today? Is she really a great stylist?

Why women are allowed to post here? Did they have their own imagineboard to post? CrystalCafe? Why they need to post on male imagineboard? Why they can't live without male attention? Are women incapable to live without men or alone? Bros, explain this phenomenon.

I think she has a great and distinctive style, sure. Haven't read any of her fiction, but Slouching Toward Bethlehem and The White Album are two of the better essay collections I've read. She has a very sharp critical eye and ear and I like her take on living in California during the death of the hippie movement.

Post-mortems on that period are always fascinating, whether they hit the mark or not. Does she hit the mark?

Well she's not writing a post-mortem so much as an account of the movement in its death throes, and she does a great job at placing it in a specific historical context. Just read the essay Slouching Toward Bethlehem and see if you like it; the thing's only like 20 pages.

I'll try it, I liked HST's take and other writers slip it in occasionally.

Her take is similar to his; it shares that same worldly cynicism that you can only really get from having "been there" as it were. Like she's openly disdainful of Joan Baez and a lot of the Haight Ashbury scene as being sun-addled space cases. I would argue Slouching Toward Bethlehem is like Thompson's "where the wave rolled back" passage from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but expanded to 40ish pages.

Men will really use any convoluted argument to avoid admitting that a woman, any woman, has talent. Even though, if anything, a lesbian is probably the ultimate woman, in that she refuses alterity.
