Good books on yoga. Preferably more philosophically or historically oriented

Yoga is interesting but personally i prefer the Western traditions of awakening understood alongside eastern traditions, which have been preserved well and are out in the open. Evola talks about "magical initiations" being a Western thing.

Damien Echols has been putting out some good stuff, but nothing you won't already know after a sufficient study of Evola's esoteric works.

Light On Yoga by Iyengar gave me a pretty good sense of the scope of yoga. "Yoga is the act of putting yourself in right proportion with everything else" is the first line I think. I personally feel at this stage that getting ensnared by the seductive semantics of yoga philosophy/mysticism is just a distraction from experiential practice and actually LIVING it. There are no 8 astral planets with 42 demigods or anything else. There are no nine sacred seals of astral realisation. You're just reading a fantasy novel. Just deepen your practice in your life and live authentically with awareness. There is nothing more than that.

I’ve read Doctrine of Awakening with such deep interest that I memed myself into becoming vegetarian and going to a Buddhist temple for one straight year. But for some reason I never finished this book even though I must have started it three times.
