Why was poetry so valued as an artform in several cultures and why was it relegated as a frivolity for fags in the last century and now ressurged in a diluted/commercial version with insta poets?
Why doesnt our society has the same elevated view of poetry that characterized lots of other civilizations?

>Why was poetry so valued as an artform in several cultures
partly because their access to entertainment mediums was limited, and because poetry was often sung or acted out, not just dryly read out of a book
>why was it relegated as a frivolity for fags in the last century and now ressurged in a diluted/commercial version with insta poets?
because its an artform with a high skill ceiling but low barrier for entry. and we havent had hundreds of years to filter out the schlock

Like classical music it was destroyed by autistic form deconstructionists (second viennese school in music case).

most people could remember poems off by heart, even dumb peasants
people would buy poetry books and recite them to their families or they would hear those recitations themselves and recite them to others
people underestimate how huge poetry was

Yes, greek people listened passively to the illiad as background noise during feasts and orgies but that's a poor example of the yuxtaposition to modern poetry. It is banal now but it was banal back then too

Before the introduction of the printing press and the cheapening of books in the 18th and 19th centuries reading was almost always done aloud in common with a group around you. this was common until the 1900s. the literate member of the family would read the book to everybody else, friends would get together and one would read a book, etc. if you got the new coleridge volume you would go and read to to the people you knew
and all that's ignoring folk ballads which are a form of poetry and were included in poetry collections at the start of the romantic era

Something seems to have changed in human consciousness, so almost no one (even people who read) can appreciate poetry anymore. Really don't know why. I know people who have the discipline to learn languages, to read philosophy, but they don't "get" even the most stirring poetry. I'd love to see studies on this, if there's any correlation between poetry-reading and e.g. musicality, IQ, religiosity, attention span, etc.

ONLY POETS APPRECIATE POETRY; THE GREAT MASS OF THE VVLGVS HAS ALWAYS ONLY APPRECIATED POETRY AS ENTERTAINMENT, NOT AS AN ART; NOW, THERE IS THE WORLD WIDE WEB, WITH ALL OF ITS CONTENTS; BEFORE, THERE WERE TELEVISION, RADIO, ET CETERA; BEFORE THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, BEFORE ENTERTAINMENT WAS AUGMENTED BY TECHNICS, POETRY WAS THE PREEMINENT SOURCE OF OTIOSE DIVERSION FOR THE AVERAGE VULGAR.

Mass media - radio, television, movies, etc. completely changed what people enjoy and how. If there is any kind of resurgence now it is probably an illusion - the internet connecting disparate individuals and groups to make an outsized microcommunity joining the last remaining poetry enjoyers.

The pattern of poesy in general, and the craft of poetry in particular, are narrationally formative of the spiritually inclined consciousness.

As language is instrumental in formation, so poetry is construmental in magnification.
