Will it help me to appreciate literature more and look on it from a wider perspective?

Yes, Homer and Dante as well.

>Homer and Dante as well.
Thought about them as well. Are there any other equally crucial authors?

>> No.21775997

nah go the opposite way of reading what you feel like and THEN realise the importance of the bible and shakespeare and all the rest through them - then you will naturally see the significance of them. shakespeare feels much richer when you read loads of modern lit and then come to him and see how huge his influence is

>> No.21776000

The Greeks, The Bible, Vergil, Dante, Ovid, Shakespeare, Milton.

>> No.21776111

I don't think so.
Bible and Homer are the essentials. You would loose A LOT of context without those two.
Bible and Homer is the baseline in my opinion.
If you want more read at least 1 opus magnum written in important European languages: Latin, Italian, German, English, Spanish, French and Russian.

Dante and Milton had much narrower influence than the rest. Dante marked a break, leading into literary renaissance, but his texts by themselves weren't read much outside of Italy. Milton was of minor importance outside of England, with the exception of romanticist period (e.g. Lermontov).

Both of them are less essential, than the Bible is.
Comedia and Lost Paradise are in the end just Bible fanfics.

No, I'm not reading greeks. I'm not going to spend years on something outdated. I will not force myself to read works that I don't enjoy. I will read the summaries and it will be enough. The greeeks would never bother with reading thousands of pages of summerian texts themselves. No, thanks, not in the 21st century.

There you have it folks, all the advice you need. I read the bible when I feel like it, I read Joyce when I feel like it, I read Shakespeare when I feel like it.

Yes but you won't like them enough in the beginning and it'll turn you off from the rest. Just start with something easy and keep going like that until you can earnestly say to yourself that you're enjoying it and then go back to the foundations which underlay it.
