I'm trying writing a novel/story, just casually and as an exercise. But I'd like your input on a few things:

1. Is it ok to write parts of scenes I haven't got to yet? Why/why not?

2. I have rough ideas about where the story can go and what can happen, but connections and conclusions I'm unsure about. Is it ok to just write and see where I feel like going at the time?

3. I've thought more about settings and characters, and less about plot. Will I be able to sort that out as I go along too?

4. I think if I don't check myself I'll go into too much detail and just describe the characters' everyday lives. Is this something I need to look out for? Is it a problem?

5. I'm not sure what the point of the story will be; I haven't thought up an ending, goal or message. Is that something I should do before I start?

Thanks /lit/ :)

You should write according to whichever process you find suitable.
Though d&e might pop in here and have a period about following set methodology and standards, this is usually something which only uncreative people resort to...

so yes to the first 3 questions
no to the 4th
and whatever you feel like to the 5th

Yes, Yes, Maybe, Try not to, people will tell you you do, you don't.

There.

As for #5. write what you can, rewrite when you need to, but get to that point and ending eventually. The sooner the better I'd think, otherwise its just writing practice.

first priority is just to get as much as you can out, like get into a flow, your inner editor will bitch but channel your inner samuel l jackson and tell him to say what again motherfucker and just bang it out and then go back and revise the fuck out of it but not until youve got a thing on paper

Ok, cool, I'll do it casual like.

Who's d&e? I'd enjoy trying any special methodologies that might make me come up with better stuff.

>>2177360
Cool, thanks.

>>2177374
I think "trying writing" is correct, just nonstandard. "I'm trying <action>" makes sense.

It somewhat is just practice, but I want plot and ending practice too, so I'll try for that.

Lol, cool!

Heh. I'm new to /lit/, I don't know the regulars! Do you have any cool methodologies for writing?

>>2178445
Yes, quite right. I have a bit of an artistic block on details, and looking for more tips is a way of putting off the difficulty, but I'll just write anyway and overcome it with practice.

"it is easy to prescribe how to become a good short story writer, but to do it presumes qualities which are habitually overlooked when one says, “I don’t have enough talent.” Let a person make a hundred or more drafts of short stories, none longer than two pages, yet each of a clarity such that each word in it is necessary; let him write down anecdotes each day until he learns how to find their most concise, effective form; let him be inexhaustible in collecting and depicting human types and characters; let him above all tell tales as often as possible, and listen to tales, with a sharp eye and ear for the effect on the audience; let him travel like a landscape painter and costume designer; let him excerpt from the various sciences everything that has an artistic effect if well portrayed; finally, let him contemplate the motives for human behavior, and disdain no hint of information about them, and be a collector of such things day and night. In this diverse exercise, let some ten years pass: and then what is created in the workshop may also be brought before the public eye."

good luck
