The oxford comma is necessary since, without it, a sentence may seem to be a list without a connective (which may be stylistic, but also improper for certain documents), or may even have a comma splice. Example:
>The board of /lit/ was filled with all types of dilettantes, patricians, plebeians, would-be-writers, readers and frogposters.
