Shadow Slave was too slow but I was with it up until the city time skip when the author then started flashing back and telling everything that happened during the skip in chronological order, making it narratively pointless.
Felt like the author only did the jump in time because he wasn't confident that readers would buy the change in characterization needed for his melodrama

AWould this blurb make you curious enough to pick up the book? I ask here because you guys actually read fantasy.
>Adah Phenric took a vow to protect Tymber from all that may burn it when she became a Knight of Valora. It was an oath required of every Knight blessed by the Goddess Valora in order to protect the land. All was well until she and her team were sent on a routine mission to hunt a monster. Things go awry and Adah finds herself to be the sole survivor. Unconvinced her comrades are dead, she ventures out into the world to uncover the reasons for their disappearance. Adah’s investigation leads her to uncover a larger mystery concerning the nature of the Goddess herself. Her mission soon leads her in conflict with a mysterious merchant and learns of a plot that threatens the stability of the world itself.

To expand on this, I'm on the chapter where Bilbo meets Gollum. I thought the chapter where they meet the trolls was completely retarded, and their working class accents were cringey and not in line with a fantasy world. I also don't like how the dwarves are basically useless and Gandalf has to save them from danger every time.
The most enjoyable part so far is by far the first chapter where Bilbo is comfy in his home and the dwarves show up. It's whimsical and cozy. Maybe I should just read Wind in the Willows again.

My sister got the first Percy Jackson set and I asked if I could start on it before she did because she was busy reading other things and I couldn't more than halfway through the first book. From the very first page I sensed that I'd read this exact same book before and about 40 or 50 pages in I realized that in fact I DID read this series before - except when I last read it it was called Harry Potter and written by some woman named J. K. Rowling. That's what Percy Jackson is, fucking Harry Potter. It is all but impossible to read if you've graduated high school, or possess male genitalia, or both. I mean, fucking summer camp for greek gods? And the outrageous, perpetual Hunger Games-tier bloodbath of children being glossed over, it's sickening, again, just like Harry Potter. I can enjoy children's fiction like Magic Tree House or the Bailey School Kids, and I can enjoy "adult" fiction like Dune or BOTNS, and the middle-ground of Star Wars and C.S. Lewis, but I can't enjoy this YA crap.

Colour of Magic also just isn't THAT great. It's not bad, it's arguably even good as fantasy parody stories go, but it's not much more than that. Everybody's pretty flat (Twoflower is a tourist, Rincewind knows one spell and is a coward, etc.) and the story just kind of... Happens.

I told him that it was no real reservation and no real event; and his face expressed displeasure. "Why," he demanded, "do you waste your time writing what never happened, when you know so many things that did happen?"

Right, right. As I said, I don't recall too much of any of those books. You can sort of see where the series really comes into its own with Mort, and the books before that are just sort of steps in that direction and the characters all feel a little off from their later portrayals, not because they grow into those characters like Vimes being different in the early Watch books but because they're just not the same characters (Granny Weatherwax in Equal Rites is just not the same character as she is in Wyrd Sisters for example, and the Patrician is APPARENTLY Vetinari even in the first few books despite that so blatantly being a different person in actions and character). The "style" of art that I can most accurately give you is something like "fantasy Belle Epoque", though that's not a popularly recognized term, what I mean to evoke is the fantastical stylizations of the late and post-Victorian era, circa 1890-1920, before the advent of Art Deco. That particularly artist associated with that image is Tom Kidd, doing homage to the famous American cartoonist Winsor McKay, of Little Nemo in Dreamland fame. Other illustrators contemporary with the period would include (but obviously are not limited to) Franklin Booth, Stephen Reid, Arthur Rackham, N.C. Wyeth, Henry Justice Ford, Alphonse Mucha, and Maxfield Parrish. The only modern artist that comes to mind is Michael Whelan's Barsoom illustrations.

Well, orcs in Discworld are sort of spoofing off of Tolkien where they're a created race. Except instead of being sort of subhuman monsters, they're just... Ridiculously hypercapable super soldiers that people wanted to get rid of for being so frighteningly capable. The only real orc we see is mistaken for a goblin because he doesn't really look like anything else, but it's clear that his mind is like half-computer in terms of ability which makes him kind of worrying if he weren't such a good person. There's implications of "other orcs just out there living alone away from people" but we don't really see much of them as a whole, or as a species overall after this. Goblins actually get a fair shake in Snuff though.

I'm going to make these shorter since I've hit my goal...

>The Iron Prince by Bryce O'Connor and Luke Chmilenko

One of the few rare wards of the state in a near eutopian future, Reidon 'Ward' pushes himself into intense combat and training in spite of a rare genetic disorder called 'fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva' in which his skeletal tissue is progressively replaced with bone. Now 18, he pushes himself in training so that he can enlist in the Inter-System Collective Military and receive his very own Combat Assistant Device. Since a child he has dreamed of participating in the Inter-Systems Simulated Combat Tournaments. This also presents a potential quality of life improvement, as CADs have been known to assist with healing and potential genetic disorders. Participating in the Enlistment tests with his best friend Vivian, both of their training and studying bear fruit.

A Combat Assistance Device appear as a pair of cuffs on the user's wrists. When 'Called' they manifest as a specific weapon depending on that user's Type. These are Sabers, Lancers, Brawlers, etc. Over time these CADs will evolve and change into more complete suits of armor that cover the user's entire body. The weapons will also develop from basic blades and axes into chainswords and the like. CAD users can also develop Abilities that enhance their weapons, such as 'Overclock' which enhances strength.

Passing the knowledge section in the 99th Percentile, Rei goes on to the Physical Examination only to fail... until he sees his 'FAIL' edited on the digital pad the physician is carrying. He passes to the final test under a technicality and meets the super AI that manages this collective eutopia, the Massive Intellect Networked Database or MIND. Seeing how Rei struggles in the face of adversity, the MIND has decided to use him like a guinea pig. Rei is assigned a low-rank CAD with a never-before-seen growth potential: S. Now accepted as a CAD user in the ISCM, he applies to one of the most prestigious military institutes in his system, Galens.

Its there that he forges friendships with others that have struggled and overcome such as the strongest first year, Aria Laurent or my personal favorite character, Layton 'Catcher' Catchwick.

[Final Thoughts]

Started off strong but the writers make some choices during the academy portion that I found questionable. It plays out a lot like a shonen anime friend group but to the story's detriment. They off-screen quite a few noteworthy fights in the interest of long-term tension but I don't think the pay-offs are there. Especially not in this book's conclusion. I would be willing to read the next book though, which is more than I can say about most.

6.5/10. S'alright.

Noticed someone was looking for me in a past thread to review their series on Royal Road so I'm giving that a whirl.

It's a story that barely even has an inciting incident or stakes or drama or conflict. It's a magic academy story that's just a normal fucking school year where nothing goes wrong.

After Rei gets worked over, the story takes a huge dip but there's enough potential in the world and with the progression system here that it was engaging enough to keep me invested until that lull. The characters they introduce to cover the spread are endearing in their own development, Sents(sp?) and his crowd especially. If the next book is another year of academy bullshit that only revolves around the team fight, I'm out though. Stakes definitely need to be escalated which is why I couldn't give it a 7.

I more meant within the realm of protagonists within these sorts of things. It's too long, it spends so much of those pages doing NOTHING interesting, etc. You don't have to be unique, you just have to be interesting, and I'm surprised I finished the book to be honest. I guess the promise alone was enough (which I'll give Iron Prince that, it does MAKE that promise very thoroughly, it just never really gives you any follow-up). Like, if you wanna compare it to Bastion, at least Bastion has stuff happening. Scorio isn't much of a character either, but plot at least happens.

i think one of Cradle's strengths is that it ties the powerlevel wank to character moments. there's a few asspulls here and there but for the most part characters need to work on themselves and become stronger - emotionally, not just physically - in order to progress which helps it a lot. characters just becoming stronger in of itself isn't really interesting which is something Dragon Ball forgot a lot time ago sadly.

Cradle's primary influence is Naruto, which is relatively old now. It's not even something Will Wight even tries to hide, he straight up doesn't even change names.
For example one of the primary groups of antagonists in Naruto is called Akatsuki. One of the primary groups of antagonists in Cradle is Redmoon hall. Red (Aka), Moon (Tsuki). Orthos is an expy of one of the konoha teachers, who is a giant red turtle. Lindon's pure madra path is based off the Hyuga clan martial arts (which are literally called the empty palm style).
Hell, Lindons entire power set is based off a throwaway villain who only showed up a couple of times in one particular arc of the series.

And me pointing this put isn't a criticism, because frankly, Wight is a much better writer than Kishimoto and he does a whole lot more with the ideas than Kishi ever did.

>> No.21764082

>>21764069
Honestly, I just like that Lindon is actually just 'some guy'. Yeah, sheer chance basically gets him noticed by some big players and he goes up from there, but there's nothing inherently special about Lindon, which I like because you get a lot of stories like this where they bullshit some reason for the protagonist being special because clawing your way up from the bottom just can't be done unless you're a chosen one I guess.

>> No.21764108

>>21764089
I mean, Lindon does have personality. I more meant in comparison to Naruto, and similar styles of things where they bring up the value of determination and whatnot. Naruto doesn't EXACTLY have that, it's more... I dunno what its themes are, actually. But Cradle makes it clear that it's about somebody who can carve out their own path, and you don't need to do that alone. A lot of people try that, Lindon is just one of the few who succeeds, because it'd... It'd be a boring story if he just kind of failed and died.

>> No.21764128

>>21764108
>it'd be boring if he died
It's be less boring if at any point it seemed possible for him to fail. Too many damn mentors, one after the other, in an endless conga line of handouts. Failure doesn't have to mean death and the end of the story, authors have to learn that one of these days...

I mean even Naruto had ramen and Sasuke to obsess over. Lindon's got... what exactly? His face has more personality than he does.

>> No.21764130

>>21764089
Lindon's only real luck is Suriel taking a shine to him. Beyond that everything kind of comes from Eithan bending fate over a barrel.
For example the trancendent ruins rising just as he leaves sacred valley isn't luck, it's a direct consequence of the Sword Sage fucking about in the labrynth. Eithan being there also isn't luck, he'd gone there because he was trying to recruit Jai Long.
You could say this is semantics, but all of those things flow naturally from previously established actions. Lindon's only really egregious luck after his meeting with Suriel is running into Dross. Everything else is either the results of his own actions, or manufactured by Eithan.

>> No.21764137

His personality is being a submissive bitch for 11 books now, which is appalling for the genre. I genuinely don't get how that reviewfag gives Cradle a 9 then reverts it to an 8, only because it'll have a poor ending. Read more, wew.

>>21764137
He pretty much drops that as his default after about book 5 though? Like he's still generally nice, because why not be, but he stops being overbearingly apologetic because by that point he's actually capable of enduring whatever horseshit people throw his way.

>> No.21764151

>> No.21764156

>>21764151
He DOES spend a good while being overly apologetic and submissive because that's what his life had been to that point, even if he hated it. It takes getting an ego-boost from killing a smug dragon lady to really make him realise he doesn't have to be like that anymore. He still says "apologies" a bit but that's mostly to friends, because he actually feels bad there if he's apologising. Or at least a few times he's even sarcastic with it.

>> No.21764157

>>21764130
You just described luck. He had nothing to do with any of that shit. Just because it was justified by the story doesn't let him off. EVERYTHING in a book is deux ex machina, it's just a matter of presentation.
The worst part isn't that those opportunities exist, it's that they were thrust upon him by the story like he was dragged there against his will while unconscious.
He exists outside the setting, invalidating it in the process.
By that I mean examine the difference between him and Yerin, a more conventional character. She got everything from luck as well, but it wasn't all, or even mostly, good luck and took tremendous amounts of time and effort to even be salvaged let alone turned into something useful.
Though even she falls into the same complete lack of agency as all the other characters. Even Eithan and Suriel, who by all rights should be EXTREMELY proactive characters shaping the entire narrative, are almost entirely passive and spend most of their time hanging around waiting for various events to unfold so they can react to them after they happen.

>> No.21764171

Eithan is literally almost always setting shit up and dealing with shit. bakker left his dildo in too long and developed toxic shock syndrome

in actuality, he got addicted to painkillers and was running low on cash so he astroturfed a fanbase to try getting his publisher to agree to pay him in full for a 4th book + a separate encyclopedia. publisher laughed it off, turns out his "quite large fandom" was the same weirdos over at the 3 seas forum + some actual schizo who started spamming untrue spoilers and pretended to be a reviewer for the entire TAE series.

finally, bakker failed to stick the landing, just like he's done with everything else in his work. interesting ideas that fall flat because he has no real conception of how to structure a narrative. he's much more interested in running around scraeming "cRaSh SpAcE oF mEaNiNg!!1!" and writing completely bonkers screeds about Trump, than he is in fleshing out his works beyond regurgitated Heidegger. We could have had soo much more, especially with things like the judging eye or the chapters about ishterebinth, but instead bakker was content to write another 40 pages about peachy prostitutes and the scent of honey and unwashed anuses engaging in the most disgusting gay-rape-cannibal-holocaust this side of a robert mapplethorpe fantasy
