>manga section at the bookstore is getting bigger at every visit
how did manga manage to grow so much while novels declined? I don't know any of my friends except for one who reads novels but all of them reads manga

Ours is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically. The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins, we start to build up new little habitats, to have new little hopes. It is rather hard work: there is now no smooth road into the future: but we go round, or scramble over the obstacles. We've got to read, no matter how many skies have fallen.

>> No.21749236

Story is presented in pictures, so there is significantly less need for imagination.
I'm really just sorry that most people will ignore the more experimental work, creating impression manga is just soap opera equivalent and wish-fulfillment fantasy.

I bought a decent amount of manga like 5 or 6 years ago but now not much interests me. That’s how I know I done grown up, I wish the philosophy section was as big as the religion and manga section.

Kinda miss it though I’d buy one punch man, attack on titan, ghost in the shell, I have most of the berserk deluxe volumes too which is the last thing I got.

>how did manga manage to grow so much while novels declined?

The way I see it, it's less that manga grew on its own and more that the YA literature scene declined hard and manga took over the market due to a lack of real competition. Western comics have been declining for about half a century now, and YA literature either alienated a core part of its original audience (young men) by becoming so feminized and politically charged, or just disappointed them (young women) enough times that those groups moved over to manga because they can find more interesting and relatable stories there.

Mysteries of the universe and stories of victory and woe pale in comparison to mankind's lust for Japanese schoolgirls, apparently.

Mangás have values, contemporary western novels are just degeneracy propaganda.

Retard, stop trying to be special by adding an accent to the a, its even more embarrassing for you to write an "s" after it as the word manga is both singular and plural

That's a pretty sound analysis. My own generation was split between manga as a new youth culture and the counterculture of reading edgy books for adults. YA was never really an option, also it's nothing but a polite term for children's books and youths experimenting with drugs aren't really amused by that. Graphic sex and violence for 14 year old asian boys, yes. Pseudofantastic tales of some 35 year old with depression, yes. YA, not so much.

here in Notusaland , manga readers are more willing to read things not translated than lit-readers and the translation industry has been decimated since the '08 crisis.

If men want to read romance, they need to go to the Japanese for it.
If women want to read a romance where the protagonist isn't a mid-20s proto-wine-aunt getting pounded by 5 separate millionaires with secret soft sides, they need to go to the Japanese.
If anyone wants to read a light-hearted slice of calming escapism, they need to go to the Japanese.

Manga is part of another medium. It doesn’t compete with literature directly. It competes with American comics. And boy oh boy is it kicking their ass. It’s cheap, it’s entertaining, it’s non-pozzed (for the most part). Polar opposite of American comics, but sure, they should keep making Superman a faggot and similar shit.

Manga didn't grew because "novels declined". Manga grew because comics, it's main rivalry in the west, declined. Novels declined for another reasons, if you ask me I think it declined because nowadays there is media that is "easier" to consume.

Manga has a higher profit margin and demand. Besides, while we all like classic literature here we’d be lying if we said that contemporary manga isn’t better than basically all contemporary literature, and quite frankly, more fitting to our lifestyles.

Yep. Manga is just better.

Books as a format are really only better than Manga for their ability to show elaborate chains of thoughts, which most people don't care about anyway

Many of them would be reading comics if comics weren’t all gay. These people play video games, drink Mountain Dew, eat tendies and nuggies and watch marvel movies. Of course they aren’t reading prose.
