Hello /lit/.
I only read non-fiction for many years but I am trying to get some fiction into my literary diet again.
I have a copy of pic-related and a copy of The Satanic Verses, which should I read first?
The last book I read was Blood Meridian, the first fiction book I have read in approximately 7 years.

CoD is a good book. I've no personal interest in SV, but if it does interest you, do read it next. Hope you enjoy.

First of all I am not an American.

Read confederacy of dunces
It's hilarious
Afterwards you should get yourself James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Satanic verses is alright. But the only reason it's really popular is the controversy obviously. CoD is a great laugh riot, definitely start with that.
You of course want to read books which don't turn you off to reading when you're starting out. And then eventually start to explore more lengthy books and stuff which are less of a sure thing.

Everyone likes Confederacy of Dunces. Read that first. But read whatever you feel like in general. Reading is not a monolithic act. I read 14 hours a day and I'd rather die than take time out of things I consider important and interesting to read Salman Rushdie.
