Why was Joyce such a jerk to everyone?

>> No.2174454

He regretted not being a singer.

Schizophrenia and generally being a drunk.
Also: Irish in the late 19th and early 20th century is enough to make anyone a dick.

>> No.2174474

I feel sorry for his brother. Did you know "A Painful Case" is basically one big stab at his brother's conservative lifestyle? Did you know what a massive cunt he was to his brother?

A Painful Case reads as compassionate until you realise these details...

He won awards for his singing. Maybe he regretted not getting through medical school? Probably felt like a horrible failure. Also his wife cheated on him after he cheated on her a million times, I think. Crybaby.

Lol, not just the early 20th Century. We are talking about a country where divorce was still illegal in the late 80's.

You think he ever touched his wife's poop?

I don't think she actually did. I know he was worried about her doing it, but in my "companion to Ulysses" type thing, the author makes a point about how we don't know she did and that the suspicion was little more than paranoia. I don't know how authoritative that detail was, biographically, but it's not the only time I've heard biographers/critics stress that she hadn't (at least when he was writing the last episode of Ulysses).

He probably touched little smears left behind when he was rimming her and fucking her ass but i doubt he actually ever touched an open-air log. O could be wrong though.

because you're a fucking dolt, dipshit.

The whole Schizophrenia thing is kinda unproven.
It's true, Jung diagnosed Schizophrenia in him after reading Ulysses, but that was just based on the novel. No actual interaction took part.
His daughter on the other hand...

Well, in studying Homer, I'm quickly discovering the guy (or conglomerate of oral poets) was a bit of a sociopath particularly where women and orientals are concerned.

Joyce, on the other hand, is frequently described as 'uxorious,' (I think I can attribute that to Amis) something that is just about reconciliable to a man who is also a serial philanderer.

Are great artists just bad people? Or else all too human? Neither are misanthropes, anyway, it's safe to say.

>> No.2176401

Best way to never be described as a jerk is to never do anything.

If you do anything, you're bound to get in the way of either (1) people who want you to do other things or (2) people who wanted to do the same thing.
