21744151 No.21744151 [Reply] [Original]

Just finished this. Are the sequels worth reading? I decide to read Dune after watching the movie, which I found very aesthetic. As for the book, I liked the general idea behind Dune, but the plot is confusing and vague. If I hadn't seen the movie, I probably would have put the book down before halfway through. it's as if you were reading it and you couldn't imagine the scenarios, because the author doesn't bring much context.

recently my friend and i read through the dune series and now he cannot stop speaking chakobsa. he insists he is a fremen native and does the sand walk in public like an idiot. he refuses to leave home without his fremkit (backpack) and stillsuit (heavy duty raincoat). it is summer so due to this he is sweating profusely and he complains about wasting his water on the living. he uses his thumper (iphone x) to call shai hulud (an uber) and speaks to the usually ethnic driver as if they too are fremen natives. i have had to stop him from walking out into traffic recently as well. he insists that he is the kwisatz haderach and has seen the way across. we went to an asian restaurant and he threatened to stab me with his gom jabbar (chopsticks). at this point, i am getting sick of it all.
if you don't want to end up like my friend, please stay away from the books. if you don't care about that, go onto dune messiah. it's pretty good. it serves as an epilogue to the first book and wraps up paul's story.

All decent stopping points. Getting into prophecy and tech stuff with the Tleilax is intredasting.

Thanks for posting this. I'm about 50pp. into the first Dune and am surprised by how much I like it. It has a similar appeal as BotNS, which is probably my favorite novel of all time. That said, I might have fallen into the Brian Herbert trap, which sounds worse then the Christopher Tolkien pitfall.

BotNS is shit taste? I'm sorry you don't have a soul. Wolfe's argument against evil is among the greatest pieces of theological reasoning.

No, the first book is a classic Scifi now. The rest are not worth it.

Midwit. God Emperor is some of the most fascinating philosophical sci Fi ever written. Heretics & Chapterhouse can probably be skipped though.

Dune is cool and a classic and important and bla bla bla whatever

Herbert is a fucking shit writter though, even among his sci-fi peers (which is saying a lot)
he has not rhythm, his prose is inelegant, his characters have no soul, his politics are all over the place.
the sequels being the known clusterfucks they are proves this. the first book is only something notable because nobody had the ideia to make a Lawrence of Arabia fanfic previous to him

It's packed with context. If you insist, read the Dune Encyclopedia.
