This is a totally incorrect reading, and worse, even Peterson does not follow it if this is his interpretation. When he rightly fought against the transgenders, did that not contradict his exhortation to "focus on yourself"? He makes videos for young men instead of sitting alone meditating on his own personal failings, is this not another contradiction? Yet nobody would fault him for doing good things while being an imperfect person. In fact he would be further from redemptive salvation if he just focuses on himself instead of fighting. I cannot understand why he is so committed to this argument.

But let us put that man aside. My interpretation of what Zosima said is that man must love his brother so deeply that he takes responsibility for his brother's sins and all sins. He takes responsibility for everything, he takes every burden upon his shoulders, and becomes a suffering servant who purifies the lives of others. I think this is why Zosima bows down to Dmitry, and why Dmitry becomes calm and resigned at his fate when he is sentenced.
