>> No.21736726

>>21736691
Nah, about 80% of all books on shelves are unread. People use it as a conversation started either IRL, or on websites like this. They use it to virtue signal how "smart" they are, not seeing that filling their shelves with mostly random classic, with no overarching theme as to why, makes them pretentious at best. Or they're just addicted to dopamine kick when they buy books, like a woman filling up her closet with clothes she will never wear.

If I was buying everything brand new, I would only buy one book at a time and only when I planned to read it, and I wouldn't see the need to buy a new one until I'm finished with it. In that case my bookshelf would be much smaller, but everything on there would be read.

I only have one shelf of unread. I've gotten rid of ones I've read I'll never go back to, gave away unread that were sitting around awhile. If I pick up books at garage or estate sales, if they sit on the unread stack too long I get rid of them. The rest are mostly books I really enjoyed, that I'll go back to, or will lend a friend. I also hold books for close friends who move a lot and books from my childhood. It's nice seeing the journey in front of you. I like picking up a book I read twenty years ago as it takes me right back. Kindles and the like are soulless. I loved used books because I can connect with a ghost. There's something truly special about it and essential to the human experience.

As far as an intro goes I would say Crime and Punishment is a more engaging book. Demons has a lot of external historical context that translators generally do a good job of covering in their notes, but as an intro I don't think it would be good. Also 90% of people are filtered by the first 100 pages, people either find it really funny or painfully boring. Personally I really love short stories from the likes of Chekhov, Gogol, Turgenev, Andreyev, etc so those can be a fun entry point too.

Arden Shakespeare (incomplete set)

>> No.21750056

>>21749986
It's like most Penguin translations, it's not totally botched but not all that great either. The main reason I have it is because it contains four stories apart from Perceval (Ivain, Lancelot, Cligès, Erec and Enide). If you're only interested in de Troyes's Perceval there is already a better translation available which tries to maintain the poetic style. The Penguin is all prose, but it still communicates itself (there is obviously more than just the style). Lancelot is easily the most interesting story apart from Perceval from a purely thematic point of view. Cligès I found oddly erotic, even though it had no directly obvious sexual content. It alternates between the male and female perspective in a way that's amusing, to say the least.

> If you're only interested in de Troyes's Perceval there is already a better translation available which tries to maintain the poetic style
Are you referring to the translation by Burton Raffel (pbuh) that is published by Yale University Press? Because that one is indeed pretty well done (from what I could read in previews), except that every romance is sold separately and they are not that cheap (I’m a poorfag). I’ll definitely be getting them because his Beowulf is my favorite version. Anyway, thanks for replying, looking forward to the Penguin edition in the meantime.
