My father has an old typewriter somewhere. I'd like to take it with me.

Will I look too much of a hipster with a typewriter next to my pc?

Typewriters are the best, they are not as slow as writting things in manuscript, but they are still ink on paper, which is a lot different. Besides, not having ctrl+z,+c and +v and other computer stuff I force myself to write better.

They are fun but very frustrating.

Computers simply do the job better and allow your mind more freedom. You can copy and paste text into a new place, read it, decide if it's better or not. And all in a few seconds. Nearly effortlessly. Typewriter's are fun physically speaking, but I think they really are a limitation on the writing process.

They allow you to write novels without using the letter 'e'

Good luck finding ribbons five years hence.

BTW, anybody know an editor that makes typewriter sounds when you hit the keys? Linux preferred.

It isn't the sound that makes your fingers cum, it is the feel. Nothing can fully replicate the satisfying *clack* *clack* of a real mechanical typewriter, when I am feeling particularly hesitant to write I treat myself with a bit of typewriter goodness, but a mechanical keyboard is as close as you'll get. I've been using a Filco with cherry blues for a good while, over a year now I think, and I will never ever go back to anything less.

Q10 does (the sound is actually sampled from a typewriter from the movie Amelie). Not sure if it's Linux-compatible though.

>> No.2176729

Q10 is not available on Linux and won't be, but thanks for the hint anyway. There are some really, really awful kludges that work in principle but no clean solution for s.th like LibreOffice.

I don't care about the feel; my fingers tire on a mechanical keyboard. Gimme something where I can type at the speed of thought several hours a day.

there comes a time when a man is no longer a mere hipster, but... a megahipster

>downloading a program that makes typewriter sounds when you press the keys

re-evaluate your life, dude

Good luck trying to hit that backspace key.

It won't force you to write better.

It will just make editing and re-drafting awkward and slow.

Pros

>the romantic notion that every letter is printed write there and then
>you actually need to think about what you want to write before you start writing

Cons
>it's noisy, especially if you're not living alone or in an apartment
>people think you're a hipster, whatever that means

You wrote it with a computer and chose not to edit it. No difference.

That's right, I had the opportunity to read my post before submitting it. I did not. Then I had the option to delete it and post it again correctly. I did not.

I owned an electronic typewriter as a kid; it belonged to my grandfather. Takes less pressure on the keys to use than an old mechanical one and you still get the satisfying tickie-tack.

I think my parents and little sister still use it at home, but it's a bitch to find replacement ink cases. (My dad says he buys them online or something.)

If your asking will it seems hipster then yeah it probably will be.

If you really wanted it you would have just done it and not given a fuck cause its what you wanted. Its not exactly like your going to be parading about showing people.

But since you asked if it was a good idea you really want people to try and persuade you to do it so you can justify it to yourself rather than just doing it to be hipster.

Stop being a bitch. Just force yourself.
