Basically there is faction in my book that uses genetic engineering to make themselves look like supermodels, they work mostly as infiltrators in social and economic position so they use this as an advantage.
They are also extremely diverse in terms of race and ethnicity for pragmatic reasons(they are less identifiable that way).

>Rational fiction (ratfics) is just group of people who like their fiction coherent and logical, even if other aspects of the story don't work.
This is what confuses me the most. None of the so called rational fiction I've read has been coherent and logical. Writing rational stories is so difficult I am not sure it can occur. I suspect it would take a sufficiently rational author to do it. But humans aren't rational. And if a rational human were to exist, they would spend their time more wisely.

The ending wasn't the issue, the previous arc was so long, drawn out, boring, and pointless that I was GLAD to have Taylor get gigabuffed through deux ex machina because it meant the story could finally END. Golden morning was a breath of fresh air compared to slaughterhouse 9000, which was possibly the worst idea ever considered and implemented in a story intentionally.
>lets take the most controversial and disliked arc of the story with characters NO ONE ever wants to see ever again and BRING THEM ALL BACK

You can attempt some rationality, SFF is laden with huge plot holes and bad writing DUE TO the meticulous autism of trying to make a coherent world, to the exclusion of a rational story. I also think, different anon btw and I'm not really in the ratfic circles, that it's targeting a limited scope of rational action. That is, someone should act naturally irrational and not tank the verisimilitude to the point you're once again aware that you're staring at words on a page. I see the problem more in mysteries where the author is working backwards trying to figure out how to connect the protagonist with a plot hook or key informationnand the result is "what the fuck did I just read?"

The talk about "weak powers" made me think that I've almost never seen a book or story or anything with "the protagonist has weak powers but uses them fancily to overcome this hurdle" actually have the protagonist have a truly weak ability, they simply have one that on the surface is underwhelming. I've seen at least a couple cases where it's more played as "the creative uses + extra hard work mean they're JUST on par with others" and that's generally more believable for me, but you get a lot where it's like "they thought about this ability for five minutes and became the most broken being around".

That's just one part of it. The other part is that everyone else is written as idiot who doesn't know how to use their power.

Some novels have somewhat competent protagonists. But very very few have anyone else who's remotely competent.

It's, what do want to call it? Weird Fiction. A lot of weird fiction from that period is like that. I do think Dying Earth gets better further in, some of it feels like he had no idea what he's trying to do other than set a mood. Wait until you start seeing the fingerprints of it in other words, Vance had an unusual influence that kept reviving through the generations.

Endymion, Hyperion Cantos #3 - Dan Simmons (1996)

Endymion opens with the line: You are reading this for the wrong reason. It then goes into why you shouldn't be reading it, which sets up the expectation for what it is, and what it isn't, about. It's a bold, reckless even, move to intentionally try to filter your readership, which does imply a degree of contempt for at least some of them. The narrator of this frame story who is writing it out as he goes along means a hypothetical in-universe reader, though he may as well mean you, personally.

So, let me be clear about what this novel is. On a reductive level it's a novel length chase. The two POVs are those on the journey and the ones pursuing them, though more accurately the pursuers spend far more time investigating and especially waiting for their quarry to arrive than anything else. It may be closer to call them anticipators. After considering how preordained everything feels to be and that almost every character seems to be just going through the motions with varying degrees of self-awareness that that they are, that seems to be an apt description. I found myself liking the supposed antagonists, especially the viewpoint character, most of all. The alleged protagonists were rather lacking and if it were only from their viewpoint then this would've been a substantially worse novel.

I don't think Endymion succeeds as a work of entertainment, though maybe that wasn't its purpose. It may instead be intended as a follow-up text of in-universe mythology, history, and religion. A New Testament if you will to the Old Testament of the in-universe Cantos. The Criterion of Embarrassment comes to mind when considering this supposed story of an incipient messiah. It's such an unflattering tale of persecution and being led along the way by some greater power that it must have happened as was written. If that was Simmons's intent, then he did well, and perhaps those who aren't me were able to greatly enjoy it for that. There may be a lot of metaphors, allegories, and symbolic content that I didn't notice other than what I did, but if there were, well, that's too bad for me.

Endymion doesn't stand on its own. However, the last one may also just be more questions without any answers aside from those you create for yourself. I'm disappointed by how much it failed to deliver in terms of entertainment for me and I don't think the next will be any different, but I'll read it anyway. My greatest problem with it is that it brings up a lot of interesting ideas and concepts and then explores basically none of them. Instead, a near majority of it is spent as shown on the cover, a raft. That makes for a pulpy adventure novel, and if that was all it were, my rating would be lower. The ending wasn't notable this time, perhaps because there's statement about how the in-universe author of the previous two books received what he believed to be excessive criticism about his endings.

Rating: 3/5

After perusing the archives, it seems to be similar. There is great praise and hate. Strangely a perspective of it being meh/decent/ok/whatever seems to be absent. That may be because only those who felt deeply cared enough to comment. Based on my reading of this book and the thoughts of others, I don't think it's all that bad. By comparison to the first two books it may be severely lacking, and I struggled with whether to rate it 2.5 or 3, but that's fine. Maybe I'll feel differently after reading the last book, but as far as I can currently tell, the absolute hate for it is unwarranted and may just be a few vocal haters. In recent terms it seems to mostly be a guy read the 4th book in early January of this year. I wouldn't personally recommend continuing past the second book at this time, but that's only a personal preference and as can be seen by the ratings, you, hypothetical reader, have a substantial chance of at least liking it.

I ask this in complete seriousness and with the best of intentions: when does this get good?

I just finished Shadow of the Torturer and I wasn't really that impressed. The first part with Severian in the tower was kino and I was pretty invested, but as soon as he went out into the city it became truly bizarre. Am I just being filtered? Why did all the women instantly fall in love with him and want to fuck him? Was he just being horny when the titties kept popping out of every female character's dress, or is there some deeper meaning that will only be revealed later? It was very jarring. I also wasn't overly impressed with the writing style, beyond the unique words it was pretty workmanlike.

Does it get better in Claw of the Conciliator?

Ahh yes bitch's titties popping out of their dresses and wanting some hot torturer cock on sight is high-level literature. I've read James Joyce, I've read the Greeks, and I'm sorry to say this hasn't measured up so far. I'm still willing to give it a chance though. I pretty easily understood the philosophical points that Severian made throughout the narrative, I just didn't see how they matched the bizarre and contrived events of the plot.

As far as I remember, very little. There are a few gay characters, but it's not put upon like modern fiction. The first book (Night's Master, which I posted) is made up of a number of interlinking tales, one of which has a male protagonist who falls in love the lord of demons, Azhrarn. Other than that there aren't many that come to mind but I might be misremembering.

There are however a number of hetero sex scenes which are written in a pretty funny way, and these freaky dwarves who love to fuck spiders, but other than that it is a far cry from Bakker, VERY far.

It's inspired by the Arabian Nights which has its fair share of degeneracy. There is definitely an erotic touch, but it's not straight up torture porn like Bakker, and Lee could write circles around Bakker any day.

If you read the Arabian Nights or mythology you encounter similar things. It's not like, "Sivesh, who was totally queer and brave and a sapiosexual, fell in love at first sight with the demon." This was written in the 70s, the fact that he's gay is not central to the narrative. He also has a wife that is made for him by the demon lord. Bakker has literally thousands of pages detailing cannablist gay demon rape orgies, this has like a couple pages in which a gay character appears. If you can't handle that idk what to tell you lol.

Title: Zeal of Mind and Flesh
Author: Marvin Whiteknight

It seemed to have some potential, but ends up being barely coherent mess. It starts like some weird sci-fi, then turns into some sort of survival in wilderness story, just to become a cultivation story with elves, from all things. Then it just gets boting with some uninspired and stupid cheap plot.

It's trash, honestly. I've seen worse, but an erotica book should be at least good at being erotic. This here barely counts as erotica, beyond a setting that could theoretically support a lot of sex. But nah, it just drops the ball and gives 2/10 porn.

Trash. Dunno why some other anon said this author was good, it was a waste of time.

>Miller goes on to posit three stages in the development of literature: first, children's fairy tales; second, hero tales which border on or perhaps include realism; and third, a second fantasy stage, an "adult fantasy" stage, represented by writers like Lord Dunsany and CAS. Most readers, he argues, have not evolved to this third stage; they must painstakingly work their way through the earlier stages, including realism, in order to attain appreciation of the kind of work CAS is doing. In short, the work of CAS transcends realism, and is the most sophisticated genre of literature.

CAS's essays on fantasy and realism have blown my mind. *Of course* fantasy is the highest form of literature. Of course "realism" is an ugly fad that will hopefully soon go away.

Finished this yesterday

9/10

It's a pretty long book (739 pages) but it flies by as you read it. The words just flow and there is plenty going on that it never seems to drag.

Plenty of action, plot twists and a variety of different characters. The story is told from two different timelines, one where the MC (Gabriel de Leon) is 16 and joins the order of Silversaints (a holy order that kills vampires) and when he is 32 some time after he has become a legendary hero saving the empire and having killed the forever king.

It is sort of like an interview with a vampire, it starts with Gabrial having been captured by the vampires and whilst imprisoned he is made to recall his life's story as one of the vampire historians journals it for the vampire Empress. There is a reason for this but it is a spoiler so won't say why.

The last couple of chapters felt a bit rushed and there was one plot twist that felt out of place, but overall A really good book. Hopefully the 2'nd book comes soon.

There's nothing really unique about the vampires that set them apart from other vampires in general, but isn't the Twilight kind of vampire shit.

The usual holy water burns them, silver hurts them etc. There are 4 different bloodlines actually 5 that have their own unique powers like compulsion, strength, able to talk to animals and the old and most powerful ones.

It is the characters of the vampires that make them interesting, not so much that they are vampires or them being unique.

The Silversaints are also halfbreeds known as palebloods who inherit powers from the bloodline of the vampire who seeded their mother's.

There isn't really anything unique about the story or setting, there is one thing but it has probably been done before in some other way. There is something that caused light from the sun to be blocked out, like some kind of veil call daysdeath. No one knows what caused it but part of the story is about lifting it, can't say more without going into spoilers.

If you like vampires and that type of setting you will enjoy it.

Bakker describes dragons pretty vividly
>Billowing gusts staggered those standing, waved the arms of those fallen. Cries of dismay and horror rifled the air, then a cataract of boiling gold engulfed Nautzera and the High King’s attendants. There was no time for screams. Teeth cracked. Bodies tumbled like coals from a kicked fire.

>With the force of a toppled tower, the dragon thundered to earth, his descent yanking smoke and ash into towering veils. Portcullis jaws clacked shut. Wings like war-galley sails stretched out. The light of burning corpses shimmered across iridescent scales of black.
He actually makes their fire breath sound formidable in a world of magic, which most fantasy fails to do nowadays.

>> No.21732748

>>21732247
Much like Bakker's version of elves the wracu are a dark reflection of dragons. Both have gone schizo since the first apocalypse, so when we meet them in the story they're just sad echoes of the visions Achamian has of the the past.
