I'm 10 pages in and all I have to say is: what the fuck is this piece of shit? Who even considers this stuff as "goos" in any way, shape, or form? I hate that I signed up for this shit in English literature. Why it is even part of the curriculum is beyond me.

I'm reading as I write this and it's so consistently bad it makes it difficult to continue.

STICK TO GENRE KITSCH; LITERATURE IS NOT FOR YOU.

Quite frankly I don't enjoy genre books as much as I do genuine literature. But reading the description of a fucking shampoo bottle is more enjoyable than this shit.

Nothing wrong with you, op. This is one of those infamous books they make you read in school that people tend to hate.

lmao and this is in a place for literature. Truly grim.

It's one of the best books ever written. You just got filtered.

this is retarded. Joyce wrote several stories in Dubliners that follow conventional narratives and don't involve the schizophrenic abstract techniques he got into later. He started doing that stuff because he was really good at writing normal stories and he wanted to go further. He could have been an english language Flaubert if he wanted. It's not random ranting, it's carefully structured. you'll never get it

Not entirely sure what you precise issues are but it takes time to get into. Dubliners was written when he was younger, I think?, but is nearly perfect whereas Portrait is mostly mediocre. Still though, it gets much better down the line. I struggled to keep reading at first as well but it eventually draws you in. The most beautiful part would be the multi page inner monologue while he writes the poem in the morning.

This cope would have worked if Joyce had actually written a half-decent conventional novel. Alas.
