makes sense within IE society as caste was present first and foremost also within the same ethnos not only with respect to outsiders, even if the two could easily interplay with each other
though IIRC there are associations with literal color in e.g Scandinavia with Jarl = white(r), Thrall = dark(er)

They obviously were. Even in Ancient Rome which wasn't that long ago (relatively speaking), read the physical descriptions that we have of the Emperors.
