Greek Description of india:
"The southern Indians resemble the Ethiopians a good deal, and, are black of countenance, and their hair black also, only they are not as snub-nosed or so woolly-haired as the Ethiopians; but the northern Indians are most like the Egyptians in appearance."
"No Indian ever went outside his own country on a warlike expedition, so righteous were they."
"Indians do not put up memorials to the dead; but they regard their virtues as sufficient memorials for the departed, and the songs which they sing at their funerals."
"This also is remarkable in India, that all Indians are free, and no Indian at all is a slave. In this the Indians agree with the Lacedaemonians. Yet the Lacedaemonians have helots for slaves, who perform the duties of slaves; but the Indians have no slaves at all, much less is any Indian a slave."
"The Indians generally are divided into seven castes, the wise men, farmers, herdsmen, artisans and shopkeepers, soldiers, overlookers, and government officials including army and navy officers."
"The Indians in shape are thin and tall and much lighter in movement than the rest of mankind."

On a philosophical level Mahabharat is probably the best out of all the epics. If you're a plotfag go for Iliad, although the former does have a cleaned up 800-page version. Iliad is also pretty much required reading so there's that. Just read both.

Because of having a complex plot and philosophical underpinnings, and not shying away from over the top fantastical shit, you end up with these character moments and carefully composed imagery that'll haunt you for the rest of your life. It's total tragedy and destruction, a beautiful trainwreck mimicking the downfall of humanity.
Iliad is mostly just greeks glorifying themselves and how heroic and badass they are, which ultimately comes off as shallow. Mahabharata feels like an epic that's a deconstruction of epics like iliad.

It depends.
masala movies definitely have them
A lot of Tamil films I've recently watched had no dance numbers(karnan, asuran, kadaisi vivasayi, vikram, writer, doctor, maanadu only had one etc). I guess there are two sides to tamil industry, one which follows the traditional mainstream Indian masala tropes and then there're directors like vetrimaaran, mysskin, selvaraj etc who want to change the mainstream expectations
Then there are Malayalam movies which are nothing like other Indian films with their naturalistic acting and indie movie tier scripts.
Bollywood(Hindi industry) is a dying industry. Almost all big budget movies it churned out last year were massive failures(dhaakad lol). I don't like bollywood and nothing good came out in the recent years other than newton, manto, sardar udam, andhadhun(coincidentally all of them have no dance numbers lol). It's not being replaced by tollywood garbage.
