You should open a Fidelity account and deposit 400 dollars and buy SCHD with it. After a few weeks Fidelity will give you a 100 dollar bonus, buy some more SCHD or VNQ with it and forget about the account unless you later plan on depositing more money into it. With your remaining 100 dollars you can go to Ebay and buy a used but higher end e-reader. Once you get that you should download Caliber and go to Libgen and get all the books you want for free.

Or you could just spent all your money like a fucking retard.

You're not gonna fill that bookshelf with $500 by buying at retail price.
Take a day and go to four or five thrift stores. Go to their books section, and see if they have a 'literature' chunk on their shelves. Within, you will find a trove of books that the thrift store masses consistently ignore. I've stuffed my bookshelves with innumerable tomes, old stuff, new stuff, Steinbecks, and textbooks and art books and literary criticism, theory books, ancient racist books, several Pynchons, the Complete Works of William Shakespeare, short stories by Tolstoy, and stuff so old that the pages are golden and sweet.
One store I go to has a little deal. Buy four, get the fifth free. Each book is $2 or 3. If I have the coupons they hand out willy nilly, I get 25% off the whole thing. According to my goofy ass calculator, I could have gotten about 275 books if I played my cards right for $500, which means you can have multiple well stocked, culturally imposing bookshelves that would be the envy of any lit poster.
My book collection has spilled over into multiple rooms. My wife is begging me to stop going to thrift stores. I mourn the truth that I will physically not be able to read all of these books before I die, but hey, that's not so bad.
