How does it make you feel to think that greentexts are a form of literature and the best ones will be compiled in books that people read centuries from now when they want to learn more about what the 2000's were like? What a pathetic life I lead. I imagined I would be like Larkin, like Borges, like the kind of refined, reserved kind of man whose job allows him an air of mystique and glum erudition. Instead I am no better than a janitor who has found himself at the till of a supermarket. In 2008 I had a brief sexual affair with a student girl who spent a month here as part of her training to become a librarian. We screwed in the storage room several times a day. It was purely physical on her part but deeply emotional on mine. Eventually she realized she didn't want this kind of job and admitted she felt sorry for me and thought fucking me would make me less depressed and her less experienced. She is now working for a marketing company and is earning more than me despite being a member of a different generation. Please kill me. Please. Please. Please God let this be the day I am struck by a truck on my lonesome drive home. More likely he was just trying to suggest that fans of the book are privileged individuals so as to make them worthy of demeaning. I have never read IJ, but I just find it weird how people engage in intellectually dishonest talking points to put others down.

I have been using this website constantly ever since 2004. There are only moods, times, specific memories. "Remember when /b/ was good? /b/ was never good". This isn't a trite observation, it is a useful and perennial observation on the limitations (and potential) of the mostly anonymous form in general. There are collaborations here and there, and lots of garbage of course. /lit/ really wasn't meaningfully better in the earlier interval described by the other user, just different. There's always been shitposting, everywhere and at all times. And the thing is, this shitposting has a value in itself.

just last week there was a dungeons and dragons for 10-12 year olds seminar, and a learn about bats class for anyone younger.

there was a board game event that had some 20 somethings and some older folk, and a tea sampler cart that went around giving nice quality drinks to anyone enjoying books.

plus the local senior miniatures club likes to donate all sorts of dioramas for the young ones to get inspired by.

someone did drop off some fliers about a trans support group but i got rid of all of them as soon as i noticed. so no worries yet.

The fact that is Beckett doesn't mean the anons are necessarily wrong. Some works by great authors are shit. Read Joyce's attempt at writing a play, for example.

It spread through the entire site. Also the rise of generals changed things. Now dedicated trolls can park themselves in a single thread and shitpost for eternity. Now the only off-topic conversations that happen spontaneously on the wrong boards are worth anything, such as being on /k/ and someone mentions phasers and it spins off into a /tv/ talk on star trek.

It's a lot like 1984 or Fahrenheit 451, very well done genre fiction with political/social commentary which lends it a sense of depth which isn't actually there. It's kind of like Rick & Morty in that the book is good, but the lunatic fanbase insists that it's relevant to every possible topic of discussion and the creator is somewhat dishonest about the work. In the book, the world is still reeling from the aftermath of a global nuclear war, and IRL Atwood says things like "there's nothing in Handmaiden's Tale that isn't already happening right now."

It's worth pointing out that Huxley's and Orwell's and Bradbury's dystopian imagery have all become shorthand for instantly recognizable and relatable political issues, but literally nothing from Handmaiden's Tale has entered the public consciousness despite the recent television adaptation.
