first time reading, half way through. It was pretty rough for the first few cantos as I had to look a bunch of words and the list of ships was putting me to sleep but I'm liking it quite a lot. Can't wait to finish this and jump straight into the Odyssey
also I've read like 6 chapters of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou and I like the atmosphere and setting but I thought I would like more that kind of slow aimless slice of life type of story.

Why not? It's a very easy and short read. Its main appeal is exactly that: Athanasius' clarity and simplicity. He was quite young when he wrote it (early 20s) so it has an almost amusing polemical tone. Honestly, it's just fun. He made me think of young Berkeley who had a similar writing style, but I'd like to read something from an older Athanasius at some point.

Can’t speak for the translation into Dutch but it’s a well written, even occasionally beautiful, book. It’s interesting to see how Darwin presents such an early formulation of natural selection. I also think some people assume it’s somehow nihilistic or atheistic because of modern associations with Darwin, which isn’t the case, Darwin became an atheist later in his life but it’s apparent from reading it that he wasn’t when he wrote his most famous books. Darwin’s writing contains a great deal of appreciation for the beauty in the natural world and his presentation of ideas is easy to follow. Though admittedly biology is part of my academic background and profession so I guess I just enjoy the history of the field.

If you don't know of any local used book stores, go to any thrift store. Usually you get a more interesting selection near cities, and the best selection is in college towns.

Alternately if you're super remote you could fellate Jeff Bezos and get big name titles through the used section on Amazon. Oftentimes thrift stores will sell overstock books for a literal penny plus shipping because they don't have shelf space for them. This usually only works for really big name classics though, like Wuthering Heights or The Great Gatsby (or mass-market high circulation books like The Da Vinci Code if you're into those). More niche classics you might have to pay a dollar or two plus shipping

this shit is great. it shows what a farce expanding education and credentialism is, and makes you want to reduce it. yet, at the same time, it makes the reader want to get as much education as possible, since while it may be against society at large's interested to have everyone maximally educated, it is currently in your person interest to get as much education as possible.

What are your thoughts on his ‘transcendental argument for god’. I can understand why he would think that only God would be a sufficient justification for logic/induction/immaterial objects but after that point he loses me. Why is the Orthodox God ‘better’ than the God of the Philosophers because He’s personal? Also, it seems to be a cop out for him in some instances. He said that he would use the argument in debate against physicists/biologists who disagree with Creationism or textual scholars who cast doubt on traditional views of scripture, but this just seems intellectually lazy in a way.

Picrel. Have 50 pages left. Great read, Wrangel was a great man and a greater leader. The Russian people truly have gone through Hell throughout their history. You can feel the pride and love for nation on every page as much as the lament and despair for what came to be. Also, the British really helped fuck over White Russia.

>It provides ultimate causes for myriad human behavioural patterns.
It provides convenient oversimplified excuses for complex chaotic problems. It's catnip for midwits.
>The need to develop the field further to better understand those patterns doesn’t change that.
If the field is undeveloped, then why are you shilling a book from it, without emphasizing that it's undeveloped?
>The only rational way to deny evopsych is to be a creationist
There are other alternatives to (neo)darwininsm (as you evopsych fags love to continually pound everyone with social darwinist single golden road to supremacy crap) than creationism, like the stabilization theory. If psychology was deterministically linear and there was but one optimal way to succeed in the world, we would only see a single animal species, instead of thousands to millions. Ever thought about that?

Just started this one today. Started the year by rereading Ender's Game and Shadow. Just finished reading for the first time Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow puppets, and Shadow of the Giant. Really enjoyed the Shadow series so far. Am trying to read them in as close to in-universe chronological order as possible. Except that I'm gonna read the books about the first and second formic invasions last.

Once I'm finished with this series I'm gonna switch gears and read something non-fiction but I haven't decided on what yet.

He doesn't actually lay out the argument in the book but I get the gist of it from his debates. It works well against the materialist or post-modern type because you need a "final category" (God) in the train of logic in order to justify anything. And that category must ultimately be circular, i.e. justify itself. Evolution can't be a final category because it doesn't justify itself. Evolution doesn't answer the question of why it's neccessary for things to continue survining, what is the purpose of survival? So this is a good argument for breaking your average western person's naive empiricist world view. Arguing specifically for the orthodox christian God as you said seems harder, I don't know enough about theology or philosophy to do it
