Why did Houellebecq's wife name herself "Lysis?" First of all, that dialogue is extremely homoerotic which makes it weird. Second of all, the entire dialogue is centered around how Hippothales is obsessed with Lysis but Lysis thinks he is repulsive and disgusting. It is extremely Freudian of her to use that as her name. It sort of implies she is herself disgusted by her husband.

She is named after the noun λύσις = resolution.
Also Lysis doesn't think that. She is closer to Hippothales considering he used to write poems about Lysis and she wrote about Houellebecq.

Lysis is very clearly disgusted and annoyed at best by Hippothales obsession with him. That is why I think it is strange she would name herself that.

The thing is I was thinking it was a subtle way of signaling that she is physically repulsed by him sort of like trolling her own husband with a reference to Plato.

Imagine you're a foreigner and your husband is a famous writer and you name yourself after a character famous for being completely repulsed by his acolyte/ lover. It's funny and almost certainly intentional.

I wouldn’t know. I haven’t read him and proudly state that I have no intention to. I just think his wife is subtly mocking him and that is funny to me.

We don’t pick them. THEY picked us and then acted offended when we were unsure how to respond in that specific situation because of the age discrepancy

Strange? Please take a look at Houellebecq. There’s an expression in my native language that sort of goes “Look what you’re sending to the war.”

The Lysis dialogue is one of my favorites. With the annoying and unwanted Hippothales following around the PERFECT Lysis and singing for him and writing poems and begging for his attention and telling him how hot he is (duh) and BEGGING to be heard. I couldn’t imagine anyone being as obnoxious and stupid as that.

She was an admirer/translator of his and he didn't pick her for her looks but for her spirit. She wears BDSM gear to his book parties and is his accomplish in the greatest degeneracy including with other women.

And if art imitates life, Serotonine suggests she fucks dogs.

She was a Houellebecq academic. He read one of her papers and fell in love because she truly understood him. I don’t think she was a translator (I could be wrong).
