21642600 No.21642600 [Reply] [Original]

I recently finished reading this. Can we have a thread on it?

General thoughts? Did you like it? I have never read it but plan to.

>> No.21642647

Gimmicky trash for children.

>> No.21642663

>>21642633
I liked it. But I also liked the gimmicks as >>21642647 posted. I found it a very enjoyable read and if you enjoy gimmicks in writing you'll likely enjoy it too.
I see a lot of people say it is scary but I found it more humorous at times taking the piss.

The book is about schizophrenia and the writing style is meant to emulate the feeling of being schizophrenic. If you read the letters from Johnny's mother at the end they make it explicitly clear that she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and it's heavily implied that Johnny inherits thst from his mother. If you start to try and tackle the book at a deeper level, connect the dots and try to make sense of the references you end up just going in circles, much like how a schizophrenic will try to make sense of patterns where there aren't any.

I found the novelty to be fun, even if you wanted to call the construction merely gimmicks.I enjoyed piecing it all together, and I'm a sucker for framing stories.

I liked that every woman he met would fuck him/blow him/give him an old fashion. Probably just his schizophrenia and didn't actually happen but it was fun to read

I really liked the Navidson Record parts but hated the Johnny Truant sections. Johnny is just a very stereotypical west coast degenerate.

One thing I did get was chapter 12 with the Holloway tapes. Periodically there is a number in the left hand margin going from 1 to 12. In the chapter it talks about how the Holloway tapes go from 1 to 13 so I thought they might be related but there is no 13 number. What was that about?

>> No.21643766

Also another thing. Everywhere online it talks about purple text but in my edition I had yellow text and I don't see anywhere online talking about yellow text.

kek I'm reading this book right now. He does strike a chord by pointing out the gaiety and childish bliss with which Bachelard describes poetic images of the house and of intimacy, but the whole formatting thing is just retarded. You could even say it's a symptom of extreme hubris and arrogance for him to maim René Char's poetry by cutting it up into some janky-ass spiral. The foreword really added nothing of value imo.

I can just picture the chief of printing at the Penguin offices, first laying eyes on this foreword, sighing.

I thought the gimmick was fun and I really liked the navidson record. The parts about the editor, zampono and the fake sources that were philosophic musings fluctuated pretty wildly as far as quality goes but I think they were effective in applying a sense of power the record had outside of the story. Its fun, its probably not a future classic.
