Anyone else a little let down?

There were some great moments, such as all characters cooped up or kidnapped in small spaces, Tengo's confessions with his father; and must say it was an enjoyable read, but it seemed to be merely a retread of any other work Murakami's written.

He's dealt with revolution before, but this time he delves more into fringe religious groups. Along with the play on prayer and believing, maybe he's contemplating more about faith.

But it doesn't really go anywhere or bring anything new in a different light.

Gotta say - seemed pointless.

I've only read half of it but it's a disappointment for sure.

It feels too much like another author trying to write a Murakami novel. The language feels flat, the surrealism rather tedious and dull, the characters boring.

It feels like a bad version of DDD crossed with TWUBC.

The ordinary and common writing style here hinders any sense of discovery like in DDD or the secrecy in SS. It fits well in many places.

This really is like Murakami's taken a few steps backwards. Everything is plain and given; there's no mystery, no haunts, no wonder in this world.

Nothing is gonna beat the wind up bird chronicle.

Except the fact it being already beaten by Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

I don’t know if everything is plain and given (the Little People really aren’t at this stage. But everything does feel a little old and worn. Fuka-Eri seems like a poor copy of Yuki from DDD for instance (actually many strands in 1Q84 feel like re-treads of Murakami’s much earlier stuff).
