This idea is extremely old and precedes Plato, it was arguably first expressed by the Pythagoreans and before that by Zoroaster. Who knows before that it might have even existed in prehistory. There is no doubt that this kind of "idealism" for lack of a better word, has animated human intellectual history for thousands of years, even christian theology even if it sounds boring and silly to us now, is the conceptual framework for modern science and even the idea of atheism, humanism, socialism etc. So I don't think this hope is a "regressing", rather its a built in animating feature for progress.
