[SPOILER] No.2161741[SPOILER]  [Reply] [Original]

So I've been looking to get into HP Lovecraft, as I enjoyed a few movies and a video game based on his books, so I was wondering what you guys thought of him. Would you recommend any stories/books?

Pic unrelated, as I don't have any /lit/ related pictures.

Just pick up the Necronomicon, has pretty much all his best stuff. The guy writes some interesting stuff and I enjoy it. That's about all I can say.

Any particular reasons why?

I have that. Very good collection and nice binding as well.

"The Rats in the Walls" is like Poe at his creepiest.

"The Mountains of Madness" is lengthy, but very interesting.

"The Call of Cthulhu" is a must.

The Rats in the walls is brilliant, i agree.

The Music of Eric Zahn and Pickman's Model are good non-mythos stories. The best mythos stories are Haunter of the Dark, Whisperer in the Darkness, and Call of Cthulhu, obviously. Mountains of Madness is supposed to be good, but it's tl;dr in my opinion.

Dunwich Horror and the Horror at Red Hook are great if you're a crazy racist.

Music of Eric Zahn, Dreams in the Witch House. Really, everything mentioned in the thread is good. His stories are all over the net, just download them all and read them at random. Some aren't great, but (to my memory, none are terrible), and they're all pretty short. Check on wikipedia to see if there's any you oughta read beforehand though.

just go the Interbutts and find some and read it

wtf -- this needs a discussion?

Also, check out the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society's movie of Call of Cthulhu. It's CoC imagined as an expressionist silent film. Really fucking good.

Do this, but read the story first.
