You can read classics like this but they are outdated. Durkheim and Mauss and Levi-Strauss and Bataille all do interesting albeit misinformed early religious anthro as well

Comparative religion always boils down to the same thing, trying to tell you every religion is fundamentally the same thing as the Abrahamic monotheist cults. Of course, since those cults themselves are the 'highest' expression of those fundamental belief systems, all you're getting is an insurmountable bias that renders the exercise useless.

Similarly, meditation studies is finally catching on to the fact that meditation can be both more multiple and metaphysical than the basic bitch secularized mindfulness that had a bunch of poory done studies huping it up and purportedly showing it to be some sort of psychological cure all which bugmen atheists latched onto along with the buddhism is a philosophy not a religion trend of the new atheists

I've only heard good things about Mircea Eliade. Haven't yet read him myself. Can't go wrong with someone so based. So yeah go for it.
