What's a GOOD work that features chess motifs?
Picture unrelated though the twilight cover design is actually quite good...

Stefan Zweig - A Chess Story/The Royal Game (alternate titles)
Nabokov - The Luzhin Defence

I'd be interested as well in any others people might know.

Didn't Perec write that novel where each chapter describes what is happening in a different square/room of an apartment block and the novel progresses through the rooms as though the building were a chess board or some shit?

Anthology of SF stories themed around chess. Picked it up at a convention as a present for my brother, a chess nut.

Not actually chess, but Iain M. Banks' Player of Games is pretty good.

I'm reading Farewell My Lovely. Shit is awesome. Chandler is as American as a sawed off shotgun.

When I was about 10 I was obsessed with chess and I read a kids' story that was based on a chess game. All I remember is that the setting was a battle between two medieval kings and that the rooks were talking birds (you know, rooks).

The names of the novels in Dorothy Dunnett's Lymond Chronicles all share a chess theme (Game of Kings, Queen's Play, Disorderly Knights, Pawn in Frankincense, Ringed Castle, Checkmate), and the fourth novel includes a climactic chess game.

Also, "You all know that each title in the Chronicles has a chess theme; that's partly because of the overall design of the Chronicles themselves - the game of chess as an analogue of the game of life."

If you're into comics, read Low Moon by Jason. It's a "chess western" - ie they play chess instead of duelling.

Everything Jason makes is quality.
