It peaks in the first chapter, I literally picked up the book last night just to read the first chapter. Then it's mostly just misery porn, which is great if it's your kind of thing but it's really not mine; I didn't have much interest in the subject matter either (maybe because i am british). Very well written though, the only thing I can say objectively holds it back is how ridiculously ignorant and senseless everyone Steinback wants you to dislike and disagree is. Felt like a soijack strawman meme with how dumb he made them seem. Makes you lose trust for the author and you get the impression he is trying to pull ideological wool over your eyes.

pic rel is probably my favourite

if changing 'Stoner' to 'Boner' is what constitutes a joke around here than perhaps you'd be better served stripping the covers of these books and hanging them on a thread around your neck as "bling". That's the relationship you people seem to have with literature: surface level, and as an element of fashion.

The womanly one here is you, telling others to 'lighten up' and calling them 'bitter' for expecting some iota of quality in posts. That is the most womanly response possible in that scenario. You wanna sit here and talk about period blood, you're gurgling in the rancid copper flavor as we speak. Time to change the old plug before you get toxic shock.

just be lax and don't bother improving, just be a slovenly indolent meat sack who makes minimal effort replies, constantly falls back on cliches and never says anything remotely interesting. otherwise you're "trying too hard" you're "taking yourself too seriously" and other such womanly, despicable accusations that no one with a pair of fully formed testes would ever say out loud with a straight face. I repeat: i will NOT be lowering my standards for the lowly masses. YOU can get better or face continued criticism.

the fact that you're calling them 'effort posts' just betrays the fact you feel like you want a pat on the back commensurate with every extra character you typed on your smegma-locked keyboard. the process itself is meant to be the enjoyment. so much for the 'world of letters'...

>Steinbeck's contacts with leftist authors, journalists, and labor union figures may have influenced his writing. He joined the League of American Writers, a Communist organization, in 1935.

>Documents released by the Central Intelligence Agency in 2012 indicate that Steinbeck offered his services to the Agency in 1952, while planning a European tour, and the Director of Central Intelligence, Walter Bedell Smith, was eager to take him up on the offer.[69] What work, if any, Steinbeck may have performed for the CIA during the Cold War is unknown.
