Kino. Just finished Fall. Incredible books. What a world Simmons created! I hear the last two books are rubbish, that's a shame.

still reading the first one and yeah, probably the best sci-fi I read in a decade

does the sequel drop the "episodic" gimmick?

The sequel does drop the Canterbury Tales type structure, which can be a little bit jaunting at first as it follows on exactly where the first book left off (really they were originally one book the publisher split into two), but I still think The Fall of Hyperion is just as good if not better than the first book.

>> No.21595916

lol I just got to the second story right now. Reading a copy I borrowed from the library because I really loved the Terror by Dan Simmons (highly highly reccomend it)

My biggest complaint so far which is really breaking my immersion a lot is the constant references to "old Earth" or "pre-Hegelia".

I know that some sort of anchoring point should exist when writing a high scifi novel like this but I really don't think that if it were that far in the future that people would really be constantly talking about something from 800 years ago.

Also OP I highly reccomend the Terror if you like Dan Simmons. It's a completely different type of novel but I think you really get to see the power of Dan Simmons' writing with something a bit more grounded.

Try listening to /lit/ less, Endymion duology is great. It's usually hated by pretentious types since its less 2deep4u than Hyperion and more of a straightforward adventure.

The first one was fine, but aside from the one with the mutated spacefarer dudes hunting a bro down inside a disintegrating wreck, which was awesome, the action scenes were interminable bullshit adn a reminder why scifi gets stuck in a ghetto

I am glad that I read the entire series. I took a break in the middle, and I think that it put a positive spin on my experience.
Space-Tibet feels like it is 80% contrived filler material, but the conclusion was worth the trek, even if it was bittersweet.

Yeah. I was not prepared for how different they would be but still loved both. My biggest issue with the first book is that it is not the second and vise versa. It was brave of Simmons to change the structure so much. In retrospect I don't think there was a better way to do it, although each has its limitations.

I think it works well for the themes of the book. The first book introduces a lot of mysterious elements which are experienced in personal ways, with the personality of the people who encounter them coloring the truth behind them, then the second slowly puts them all together into a bigger rational picture where the difference between science and the supernatural is almost meaningless. It follows the progression from mysticism/paganism towards monotheism, and that Simmons pulled it off without feeling dry or contrived was fucking incredible.
