With my recent increase in exposure to China and other similar superficial society, I've been thinking how I hate things like:
>plastic surgeries
>staged tiktok videos
>filter apps that alter your face
>gratification from superficial things like social media
>people adopting one trend in fashion, music etc. but ending up being an npc
>lying about covid to save face
>corrupt authoritarian government

I know these things happen everywhere, and the country China is not what I want to focus on anyway. Do not debate about it in this thread.
It's more about not valuing "the truth" with a little bit highlight on true aesthetic/beauty, like how I think doing plastic surgery means acknowledging that you're ugly, or following centralized fashion trends goes against creativity itself, or chasing things to appear good on a superficial level is bad in general.

I want my thoughts to be reaffirmed by some books. I'm a rather newfag in literature so I'm open to be recommended to some of the essentials.

I'm not even from the US and my exposure came from interacting with Chinese(mainland) foreign students in my university. Most people can't even observe them through the internet because how isolated they are online, but when you do you'll realize it's nothing compared to the west's Instagram culture. Even at pretending, there's a line where things can't be fabricated anymore without betraying human's perception of truth itself. Yes, the obvious, elaborate staged Tiktok videos directly relate to them lying about covid like no other countries do.

I'm surprised this isn't more of a thing, in the case of Bolsehvik Russia we ad to suffer a long of pretentious fake-intellectuals holding up crappy Russian Empire literature and crappy Expat Soviet literature, the same dynamic would be true here, as it's displayed in some of the comments already, where:

2) those problems are treated as if they're specific 'to' that single state, and blamed upon it,
3) naive grassroots forms in opposition 'to' those problems and believes that the single state had created them,

There's a difference between photoshopping some parts of a body to a believable extent that is easy to sustain in real life, and altering your face and skin to a form you would never achieve and is humanely impossible. There's gotta be some line where you realize what is acceptable to pretend and what is not.

That's just about how less intelligent they are in doing the pretending. Now about how they are fundamentally different in valuing the truth, let's compare the tendency of following the fashion trend between the US and S.Korea. The collectivist S.Korea has more people following one trend and that's how you end up with seeing comical amount of people wearing the same clothings and haircut in the street of Gangnam. The individualist US on the other hand, has a better judgement on whether they should follow the trend or to just choose the fashion that is objectively look good on themselves, i.e. not abandoning the truth to appease the collective. This one is not explainable by them being less intelligent or having less sense of aesthetic.

nope. i stalk a lot of women on western and chinese social media and the difference is night and day. as people have already stated multiple times ITT, western people tend to do poor photoshops to make themselves look better whereas a lot of chinese people just go full anti-reality mode and use filters that straight up make themselves look like elves and often try to pass it off as real. there is a massive disconnect from how they are on social media and IRL, in my opinion because they are so hilariously obsessed with the concept of face that they're willing to live an illusion at this point. and they get away with it because in their culture it's often rude to call anybody out on this kind of thing.

i like chinese culture and people but the specific variety of autism they have regarding presentation > facts crossed into absurd territory arguably centuries ago and it's only getting wackier as their government descends into authoritarian madness. nowadays the average chink is so alienated and withdrawn that they infamously will not aid a dying child in the street due to the fear of scams or poor treatment in their courts, and this seems to be affecting even their relationship with the truth at this point.

I'm from Hong Kong and for the longest time I've been feeling pretty hopeless about how everything is decadent and rotten and ugly and dishonest, and how most people on the internet are extremely insecure, resentful and bitter at the same time. Not to mention the retarded covid policies from the gov.

Anyway I dunno much about books that are critical of modern chinese culture, I usually try to look for books that confirm my values instead. Books about traditional or inner beauty like Death in Venice, Mishima's Sun and Steel, or books about finding self-identify like Portrait of the Artist. I know they're meme picks here since I don't actually read much I'm just throwing my two cents here.

If you want something that is of critique of the modern chinese culture then maybe you could look for The True Story of Ah Q by Lu Xun if you're interested. Not sure if it got translated though
