Why has the quality of fantasy releases dropped so harshly? It seems like the entire genre has been locked into the young-adult section for a decade.

Why isn't sci-fi having this issue?

>Why isn't sci-fi having this issue?
Fantasy is about repressed sexual desires. Only adolescents are sufficiently repressed to need to structure their sexual world through fantasy.

Science-fiction is about the sociology of contemporary society so it is still quite healthy.

Compare to Spec-Fic's retarded child: alternate history, where grown adults wish that things had happened different politically, as a way to deal with their political impotence right now.

I read more underground alternate history about the reasons for failed procurement processes, or why obscure small economies indicate that revolution was impossible for particular reasons.

But yeah maybe, if you reckon sh5 is alt-history I'll give it ago. Novellists tend to be really really squishy soft, and I like my alternate history quite hard. Especially about historiography and causative structures. Someone mischaracterised Stalin's character in the context of a reasonable causation for a Soviet Party position on Poland in 1944 and it shat me to tears. They misjudged Stalin's desire for geo-political control as being motivated by expansionism rather than opportunistic. (An expansionist Stalin would have given PCI PCF instructions to conduct revolution, and would have supported the KKE to win). Look upon my pathetic political impotence.

Fetishistic obsession with character drama and world building as substitutes for actually interesting stories. It's largely the same reason why modern readers can't get into any genre classics, for example. Their focus is simply different.

Dropped harshly? That happened 20 years ago, if not more. A truly great work of fantasy hasn't been published in a long time. And that's normal. Fantasy is a dying genre. Much like romanticism, Russian realism and medieval poetry, it isn't going to last forever and it's going to die soon. Of course, crap will still be published, but that's not particularly relevant.

Heretics of Dune it is, thanks. I haven't read God Emperor in years, can someone re-summarize the Golden Path and why Leto II decided to follow it, but Paul did not? My impression was that Paul realized there would be suffering either way: going down the Golden Path and being tyrannical, or not going down the Golden Path and letting humanity die off - and he just couldn't make the choice so decided to kill himself out in the desert? And so Leto II obviously went with the latter choice.

I searched for books where characters are competent and intelligent but couldn't find any. So I tried out this genre called "rational fiction" and it made me lose all hope in literature. Apparently rational fiction means gary stu self insert garbage that is not rational at all. Like Project Hail Mary or Worm, which both have very high ratings.

Starts as a typical YA novel but give it a chance.

Alternatively you can try Pale Lights by the same author. Better writing after the lessons from PGtE but it's only halfway through the first volume.

People also suggest Mother of Learning for rational fiction but it's a slower burn than the rest.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen him recommended here before but I really like his work. It’s just fun comfy high fantasy adventure. Not grimdark, not YA. Very classical. Each book is mostly standalone, but takes place in the same world, and there is one book that is an avengers-style crossover where multiple plot threads and characters from past books come together to save the world. I would recommend googling a reading list to read them in chronological order. As I recall he got started as an author by writing a sequel to LotR, and a publisher liked it and took it to the Tolkien estate who of course said no, so the publisher said “ok, go write your own LotR trilogy in your own original world and then we can publish your sequel to it” so Mithgar is very Tolkien-esque classic fantasy if that’s what you’re looking for

He also has a fetish for Yoda-speak, constantly putting his verbs at the end of sentences, I swear if I see the sentence "Onward they rode." one more fucking time I will set fire to his house. It is a completely avoidable grammatical trap but he insists on smearing that shit over the page as much as possible, which is a damn shame because his books are as comfy as a Disney animated princess movie like Sleeping Beauty, or Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings.

>The plot is tall muscular hobo mommy beating the shit out of everyone for three books.
I'm 760 pages into the 1120 pages of the omnibus, and so far 90% of the book has Paksenarrion being raped, captured (like 5 separate times), tortured, bullied, duped, conned, scammed, mindbroken, and crippled, as well as having a childlike naivete so profound as to border on actual mental retardation, with a brief interlude to witness some random side-character have his cock cut off.
It is without a doubt the stupidest and most incompetent attempt at writing a strong female heroine in fiction that I have ever read, though mercifully, I have not read a particularly large amount of such. I think I'd sooner read an 800 page side-novel by David Eddings about Belgarion's nearly useless wife Ce'Nedra, but perhaps fortunately, Eddings is no longer alive to commit such a crime. Fortunately, Polgara the Sorceress has been written, so I have that to look forward to at least.

oh by the way, there is absolutely NOTHING erotic about Paksenarrion, she is a completely non-sexual character - probably the first genuinely asexual character written in a novel, the very idea of sexual relations literally never enters her head and she can't really seem to comprehend just what happened when she was raped (twice), let alone considers the possibility of having children; indeed, she doesn't seem to correlate the act of childbirth with sexual intercourse

The rape itself is ancilliary, in fact it literally happens "off-screen", the actual descriptions are solely a matter of Paks being naked and beaten to a pulp and writhing in such agony she can't stand (which seems to be her natural state in the series, as she rarely spends much time not being a miserable lump of flesh). Honestly, pulp damsels from the 1930s were never as big of a weenie as Paksenarrion is.

Inversions (not even overtly a Culture novel except for a throwaway event near the end)
Look to Windward (just all around good)
Use of Weapons (definitely his best sci-fi novel but somewhat obtuse and a slow start)
and Consider Phlebas
If you want some other good similar sci-fi I'd recommend his non-Culture book The Algebraist and Verner Ving's A Fire Upon the Deep. Also the Gap Cycle by Stephen Donaldson is awesome but not really similar in theme.
Speaking of Donaldson, holy shit his new trilogy is dank. People who write him off because of Thomas Covenant really miss out on the rest of his books, he never writes the same book twice.

This is a good example of why a quick google search isn't very helpful if you don't actually make sure the answer it spits out is correct. Bruce Bethke wrote that story sometime in 1980, only published it in 1983. City Come a-Walkin' has a publication date listed as January 1, 1980, and so necessarily was written even earlier. So, despite Bethke coining the name of the genre later on, his wasn't the first instance of cyberpunk. William Gibson identifies City Come a-Walkin' as the first cyberpunk work, I've not come across a reliable source putting the genesis any earlier.
