I'm going to work in Belgium for a month as part of an international student exchange program. We were assigned to read a book or two written by a Belgian author. There seems to be quite a few popular Belgian authors, but I don't know which book to pick, which is why I need your help /lit/.

Jean-Philippe Toussaint is always a good choice.

His books are usually pretty short too, which might help if you aren't really into the assignment.

'Fear and Trembling" by Amélie Nothomb

>> No.2158534

Simenon has also some fine books.

Can't recommend this one enough. The author isn't a very typical Belgian though. She has spent the first 20 years of her life in the far east, and most of the rest in France.

For a Flemish writer you should look into Hugo Claus. I'm not much of a fan myself, but he is rated very highly among post-WW2 Flemish authors.

Theres this Flemish movie BenX based on a book, its about an autist who plays Archlords and is obsessed with it, I think its a different mmorpg in the game but its definitly worth a read.

Where in Belgium if I may ask?

I'm Belgian, and my personal favourite is Cyriel Buysse. If you're into 'light', socialist literature, try him!

>> No.2158555

Theres this movie BenX, about an autistic kid who is obsessed by an mmorpg and tries to meet up with one of his "party" members. It's based on a book, definitly worth a read
the name is "Niets was alles wat hij zei" by Nic Balthazar.

Where in Belgium are you going to if I may ask?
