My reading comprehension has been just fine with slow reading but I feel I could read more books if I speed read instead. Is speed reading as effective as slow reading when it comes to understanding books?

no speed reading is not as effective as slow reading in terms of understanding the book.

why

because you need to stop and think about what you are reading to actually retain any understanding of it. It mostly depends on the books you are reading though, if you're just trying to churn through hundreds of garbage-tier novels then go ahead and speed read.

You need to read at the speed of your comprehension, not some arbitrary external measure. With some books this might mean you read 200 pages a night, with other books it might mean you read 2 pages a night, doesn't matter. If your comprehension is failing than read slower but reading slower will not mean greater comprehension as a rule, reading Hop on Pop at 3 words a minute is not going to make you understand it better unless your are 4 years old.
