That's an interesting question. It's more structured, but it makes use of more archaic language, I think. It's basically Tolkien's Old Testament. If the part you're reading bores you, skip ahead until something engages your interest. it's quite different from LOTR because it's not a single adventure but more like a collection of "biblical" parables about transgression and repentance and eternal sin etc. Some kino stories however if you're interested in the history of the LOTR world. Im comfortable with admitting that a key aspect of tolkein is a deliberate intent towards making in universe historicity. how a legacy forms and how epitaphs are made, and how that results in sorts of conventions that could come off as overly self indulgent from a more brief glance. Just as I can make fun of Vance’s Exasperating Eloquitions in Dying Earth, that stylistic choise can seem grating, but I think it directly contributes to the essential whismy of those writtings. where a lot of the interest is in HOW something is communicated in this far off strange world.

It’s one of my favorite books, but if one were to be uncharitable in their description one could call it pedantic, jumbled, etc. I appreciated it for that though because it makes it feel like a book out of time, a “newtique”. The random trivia and genealogies, flying past hundreds of years in a paragraph only to spend pages on one small event contributes to the mythic quality. Book of Job / Children of Hurin and Tabernacle description / Elven genealogies. Of course you can’t just say “it’s good because it’s like the OT” though. It has a bunch of great stories like the flight of the noldor, the music, beren/luthien, children of hurin, battle of unnumbered tears etc.

I think Christopher Tolkien said his dad left him in charge of all his unpublished writings, journals, notebooks and letters, with the expectation that he should use be the steward and executor of his work. While certainly the morality of publishing the Silmarillion can be debated, and whether we should criticise Tolkien for work he didn’t publish directly, I think there is still merit in critiquing the book regardless. I dislike viewing ‘wordbuilding’ as a skill in itself that is seperate from plotting, setting, and characterisation. I believe that the world should just naturally build itself as the author crafts the story. This is my fundamental gripe with the fantasy genre as it exists today, and though Tolkien didn’t really have one, I consider ‘magic systems’ to be even more egregious. I would much rather read a popular history book then random stories set in the same universe as a popular story for the purpose of ‘fleshing out the lore.’ I’m glad you enjoyed it though.

I feel even more strongly though that many of the themes he uses in his story telling are nigh-universal, a lot of people read about The Shire and Hobbits and think "Wow that's me and my family" or "That's the way I wish to live" because it invokes the primal instincts to seek comfort and joy in simplicity . It's been argued that Hobbits = Ireland, Hobbits = Finland, Hobbits = English Countryside because people choose to see the best aspects of themselves reflected in hobbits.
