You have a few nice volumes, mostly the everyman's Gibbon and Proust, and the Folio plutarch, but I kinda feel bad for you. All of those gimmicky plastic books like the Dune cheapen the whole look. The Cambridge Hobbes and Locke are great, I have those, in addition to the Yale editions, which is a boon to the shelf, but overall you seem to have a few gems nestled within unproductive. Maybe get a good dune?

I agree the Barnes & Noble "Leatherbound Classics" are bleh; for a long time friends would give them to me as gifts and I always felt bad when I went to get rid of them, so I just put them on my shelves, and mixed in with the rest of the books I feel like they don't feel too bad or out of place. De gustibus non est disputandum though. As far as 'nice volumes,' antiquarian/collectable books are in another room. Probably somewhere around 100-150 of those.

FWIW I am very disappointed in the Folio Plutarch, as the lives are presented in chronological order and not in parallel.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit, I read it on a wim and after looking it up saw that people at the time accused him of plagiarizing Kafka, which I assume would be the trial. They do have very similar settings but are overall different in execution imo. I noted the similarities myself and was somewhat surprised to hear Nabokov claimed full ignorance as well since I would have guessed it was an inspiration to be sure. What do you think?

Nobody said that.

>Unless you're pulling almost every single book out from your shelf daily, it's just masturbatory and a waste of space to display your pseudointellectual tendencies
What if a person is pulling volumes out every other day, or weekly, or monthly, or even annually? Having books available to pull when you remember something you want to go back to or to look something up on occasion is useful. I've had passages of books that I've come back to after 8 or 9 years. There are also a few favorite books that just make me feel better of being nearby. Your obsession with how other people 'waste their space' is petty and kind of ridiculous - why do you care how people use their space?

>Display pieces should ONLY be for display
What an absurd maxim. Items can have more than one function, and aesthetic presentation can be one of them.
>If it has functional use it's not for display, and books have functional use
A kitchen table also has functional use, but there's nothing wrong with choosing one that feels attractive to you.

Honestly anon, you're just an absurd jerk trying to force his own pseudo-minimalist preferences on the world at large. You're the type of person that becomes a petty tyrant on an HOA board who goes around telling people that they can't have a fruit tree in their front yard, just because. Get a life anon.

Before I collected them, I bought several of the rare ones in the early 2000s on the clearance rack at Barnes and noble. They were $5 each.

Our house has three means of egress, the main path into the city forces me to pass an enormous used bookstore. I bought about half there over the last year. The most expensive was $15, the la quartet, but they're typically about .50 to 11.00. Most are five bucks. I keep passing the brave new world because it's 12 and I don't need another copy that bad. They always have catch 22, Updike, Toni Morrison, Achebe, and the poets but I have never considered buying those books.

A few came from a local thrift shop, the death in Venice and Camus were both 3$, and I bought about 12 on used book sales from large eBay sellers. They do deals for buy 3 get one free. That's where I found the Hector Berlioz

Yeah I read Johnny’s whole story, just to hear the snippets about Zampano mostly, it’s funny that Truant is living in LA in the 90s slaying wicked hot gash and doing glorious unadulterated drugs and had a cool character building stint as a runaway fish cannery/boat labourer but he’s still got the shittiest attitude in the world, and somehow he’s more well read than most of /lit/. The extra exhibits of his moms letters are pretty good.

Do you feel tempted to start making your own footnotes and annotations? I didn’t wanna fuck up my copy but I felt like the book wanted me to contribute in some ways, point out stuff the other foot notes gloss over.

The one thing that’s 2 deep for me is some of the more “hidden” concrete poetry I can tell that the text is forming shapes and patterns but sometimes I can’t make out what it’s supposed to be. I’m gonna re read it later this year after I go through more of my reading list.

With the patterns, I tried taking a pic but it s impossible, but around page 432 and I think also in the 200s, where the words are floating around, pinch a couple of the pages together which also have unusual word placement, then hold it up to a strong light source, then you should understand

I've been tempted but I've never done it before, my copy (full colour) I found in a random bookshop and it's sort of falling apart but I suppose that fits the theme.

I might have to go back and read the Johnny stuff, I've been reading a lot of BEE'S work so it'll probably be quite similar

I don't understand why you'd try to be accurate to Cyrillic in one way but ignore the other. if it's Italian doesn't that make even less sense because there's never an implicit 'y' before an e in Italian to my understanding.
