I finished reading all the books I wanted to read (i.e., the western canon according to Harold Bloom) in 2017, so I haven't read since then.

It's been a while since I've read this book so help me out with a couple of questions that I have regarding your post:
1) what were his biggest mistakes?
2) why do you think he never self-actualized? I mean that is the whole point of the book.

Kochan consistently makes mistakes concerning the nature of his own love. It begins with the denial of his sexual feelings as a reflection of himself (as seen in his encounter with Omi as a teenager, Kochan has sexual feelings for him but is not willing to accept that they reflect an aspect of his true nature which loves men. This similarly occured with his small encounter with Yakumo and his squimish feeling nwar the end of the novel with his classmates discussing sodomites). Kochan (at least in how I read the story) is a heavily fragmented character that does not (or is unwilling) to reconcile his mask to his true nature, causing his constant depression. The ending shows this especially: despite expressing a deep sense of (non-sexual) love for Sonoko and wishing they could get together regardless of her marriage, Kochan reveals his true nature in his keen, detailed (and seemingly sexually motivated) observation of a young street tough. In the end, Kochan is two characters as at the beginning: the child who wishes to be normal and the man who does not know who he is. [/spoilers]

[spoilers] Also some futher mistakes: not marrying Sonoko despite believing he wanted to and taking the easy way out of the situation by using Kusano as the bearer of bad news, not being able to fuck a prostitute, acting as an honors student despite putting in the lowest effort, his realization that his death drive was not as strong as he thought, and in relation to this his lying about having tuberculosis in order to get out of active military service. [/spoilers]

I read The Hungry Moon. It was alright, the beginning was quite boring until it started with the moon cave stuff. It was very interesting until Mann came back. Then it was boring again.
4/10 high highs and low lows, problem is there was many lows and few highs.
