This is one of the most overrated books in history. It’s kind of funny and that’s about it

Every time the story grinds to a halt because the narrator has to ramble about whales and whalehunting.

Etymology and Extracts really is an underrated opening. Melville makes the main theme of the book clear from the start.

For me it’s the cuddling in bed scene

It's good from the first page. If you don't like it by a few chapters in you probably won't like it all. It isn't for everyone. I'm reading it for the first time now and I'm at chapter 60 I think. It is an incredible book. It's more about the prose than the plot for me. Although I am thoroughly enjoying learning about whaling.

A friend of mine asked the other day about reading Moby Dick, and I was about a tenth of a second from instinctively going over to my bookshelf and grabbing her this copy to lend. I would have been in quite the sour pickle had I picked it up and then had to fabricate some excuse for why I couldn't actually lend it to her.

When he talks about the biblical and mythical symbolism of the color white, just in case the reader is too stupid to get that the whale's strange color means something, but is still smart enough to understand ten solid nigh unreadable pages of obscure religious references.
