I still think imageboards and forums have a place on the modern net. The real problem seems to be lack of proper moderation and no respect for board culture and the whole "lurk moar" thing is basically dead. A lot of modern 4chan really does suffer from social media syndrome in the sense that a lot of posters here just post rage-bait to farm replies which is essentially what modern social media is designed to do in order to maximise engagement. Again, this wouldn't be a problem if all boards outside of /b/ had functional moderation but it seems only /a/ have it in current year. Problem is that this kind of attitude is even seeping out to smaller imageboards to the point where old chan culture is more or less unrecognisable, and this happened in the span of only a few years.
