can any other anons relate to not being able to read through an author or movements entire work and thus, theoretically, not 'having read them'?
i've read two of pynchons book for example but i now have little to no want to read the rest of them. his style, what they're about just don't interest me anymore. feels tourist-y and lame

No (because that's a retarded way to look at it).

what's a better way to look at it?
part of my doing this is trying to 'fit in to the club' of /lit/ and read the stuff they've read
i don't really have a 'taste' of my own, i'll read just about anything randomly and indiscriminately

Don't force yourself to do things you're not interested in or can't see yourself becoming interested in. Maybe write a short essay to try and figure out what you dislike about Pynchon or what *isn't* drawing you in.

for pynchon i've just moved on from his style. it's too much, at least for now. i've done this with other authors as well were i simply move on from liking their body of work or style

>Don't force yourself to do things you're not interested in or can't see yourself becoming interested in.
here's my problem: if i don't force myself to do shit like this, i never do anything. i laze around listening to music and overthinking and doing nothing to exercise my brain. i understand it's important to read and to read great books but i often times don't really feel it. i guess i'm just an average joe trying to be above average to be better than people

I don’t know why this is a problem. Reading an author’s work in full is something you do if you’re a hardcore fan. Very few authors’ entire catalogs are worth reading unless you are obsessed with them.

that's actually a fair point, though in my head i always revert to thinking it isn't fair to criticize an author without understanding them fully

Pynchon writes about pretty much everything though... and changes his style pretty drastically with each book... If there is a single theme to his books they are about what has been overlooked, which is the exact opposite of "tourist-y".

i'm not saying pynchon is tourist-y, i'm saying it's tourist-y to only read one or two of his books and then move on. feels like i'm not fully appreciating his work as a writer
