It's a story about self-preservation. It doesn't have the typical Tolstoy moralfag spin to it, which makes it unique. It definitely has the edge I think was missing from W&P

It's absolutely brilliant. One of the best stories ever written. It's amazing how even the minor characters in Tolstoy's stuff, like in Shakespeare's, can be so interesting and alive. It's definitely not more "brutal" than Blood Meridian though.
